Welcome back to the United States Border Patrol El Centro Sector. I’m Assistant Chief Patrol Agent, Joshua Devack. Where I’m standing right now is on the international border of the United States and Mexico in Calexico, California. A couple hundred yards in front of me is the Calexico Port of Entry. To my right, as you can see, is the new border wall system. In fact, this was the very first section of new border wall system completed on the Southwest border.
The new border wall system consists of a 30-foot steel bollard barrier, accompanied with border roads, lighting and detection technology. However, this was not always the case, as less than two years ago the only border infrastructure in this area is what was referred to as landing mat fence. Landing mat fence was easily climbed, easily cut and provided an officer safety risk to agents as they were unable to see who or what were staging on the other side.

This particular area requires a critical response time to elicit cross border activity as it emerges as less than a 100 feet from where I’m standing exist retail shops, restaurants, schools, and parks. Since the border wall system was completed in this area, local business and commerce is thriving as areas once considered dangerous are now secure. In addition, overall crime in this area has been significantly reduced, thus making our community a safer place to live and work.
