WARNING! This is an undercover investigation that contains scenes of animal cruelty. Viewer discretion is advised.
What you’re about to witness is an inside look at a spent hen slaughter plant operated by Butterfield Foods in Minnesota.
Spent hen is a term for a chicken who was used in the egg industry, but is no longer commercially profitable. In the United States nine out of ten of all farm animals slaughtered are chickens and turkeys. And shockingly, they are not even protected by the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act.
Abuse, and mistreatment are common in factories like this.
Thousands die during transport due to severe weather conditions and overcrowding. But the millions who make it this far will be yanked out of metal crates and hung upside down in mechanical shackles.
They are dunked head first into electrified water in an attempt to immobilize them before they reach the slaughter machine.
This device designed to cut their throats often fails to end their lives.
Many birds miss the blade and are forced to endure the next step while fully conscious.
Remember this bird; we named her, Ann. Ann like several other alive birds seen here will be drowned in this tank scalding water.
Birds who were scalded alive turn red, their hearts rushing blood to their skin; including birds like Ann, who have to endure all this, while still alive.
In a period of just 30 minutes, the HSUS investigator saw more than 45 hens who have been scalded alive.
The practices you’ve just seen are standard in the poultry industry.
You can help reduce the suffering of chickens in factory firms simply by eating less meat, demand that the U.S. Department of Agriculture include poultry in the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act.
