I’m Attorney General Alan Wilson, with the hurricane heading our way, South Carolina’s price gouging law is now in effect. It’s important to keep in mind that a price increase is not necessarily price gouging, even if it’s a big increase; it could be the normal effects of supply and demand. But the state price gouging law does make it illegal to charge what’s called an unconscionable price and that’s defined in the law if you feel like you’ve seen price gouging we need your help to be able to investigate those claims.

First report it to our office, we don’t have investigators, we contact local law enforcement to investigate and they’ll be busy before a storm. But after the storm we’ll have them look into price gouging claims and we will prosecute those that warrant it. When reporting it to us, note the time address and name of the gas station or other business along with the price you paid.
Write down prices nearby and the same information on those stations or businesses.
Take pictures that identify the gas station or business along with the price and keep your receipt and when you contact us, we’ll need your name and contact information in case we need to follow up.
The best way to report it is to file a report on our website at www.scag.gov that is over my shoulder right here, that is what the front of the page looks like.
You can also email that documentation to us at email@example.com.
If you don’t have internet access, you can call us at 803-737-3953.
That’s our normal constituents services phone line but you can leave a message with the information we need and how to contact to you so we can investigate your report.
Again, we appreciate your help and be safe.
