If everyone could please welcome our next speaker, Sef Scott.
Unexpected. That is what I want you to remember. Unexpected. First and foremost, I would imagine that it is entirely I would imagine that to the seniors that know who I am that it is entirely unexpected that I would be standing here giving a speech. For the friends and family in attendance here tonight allow me to briefly explain this unexpected choice of speaker. My name is Sef Scott and I am a student with learning differences. To be more specific, I have Autism and a social communication disorder while I have the ability while I have a vocabulary that you do and I have the ability to physically produce spoken words it is not a normal thing for me to electively speak. Just by my being here speaking to all of you, me, that alone is unexpected.
I imagine you are wondering how that it could possibly be that I am standing here giving a speech. (Applause)
My brother Sin, is a 9-year old brain tumor survivor who has given dozens of speeches to raise money for various children’s charities since 2009. So with his help and that of my mother we work sentence by sentence to make my voice heard.
Knowing that I want to be heard, I imagine that is unexpected. In front of me I see athletes, musicians and scholars along with shy loners and class clowns. Many – many of you fit into more than one of those categories.
At the same time, all of us have plenty about us that makes us all unique. What a wonderful mix!
We all share one thing in common for sure. We all made it! And how do I know that? Well it’s kind of obvious. You’re all right here with me at a graduation ceremony wearing those caps and gowns.
Yes, I have Autism but I am also a smart aleck, unexpected right.

In your lives, going forward after high school, the unexpected from you can be a blessing to those around you.
Standing in a long line, waiting for a table at a restaurant, when your name is called let the people behind you go first instead. That simple gesture could brighten what might have been a gloomy day. Unexpected.
Bought two tickets to a concert months in advance then something comes up preventing you from going. Why not donate your tickets to an organization like Hope Kiss so a family with a sick child can go instead. Unexpected.
Say thank you for doing a great job to the special needs individual who bagged up your groceries in a checkout line at Kroger. Unexpected.
You can sprinkle unexpected moments throughout your everyday life that can benefit those around you with very little effort on your part.
Now moving on to the biggest kind of unexpected.
Some of you may have your outline for life already written in pen. You have known since you learned to walk where it is you want to go in life. Some of you can imagine having plans worked out any further then breakfast tomorrow and instead choose to live in a moment. I think though that the majority of us live in a big pie wedge between those two.
Personally, I don’t think there is anything wrong with any of those possibilities. Are your next steps beyond tonight yours or are they what you believe those around you expect you to take?
Actually ask yourselves are your next steps where you want to go?
If they aren’t then step off of that path!
Will that be unexpected?
It probably will be if you are not sharing your hopes and dreams with your loved ones.
Don’t follow someone else’s dreams.
Don’t waste time on something you never wanted. Do the unexpected!
It is your life that you are living not anyone else’s so do what fulfills you.
Don’t fear the future.
Don’t fear the unknown.
Will it be unexpected?
Yes it will but that does not make it wrong.
Remember, if you are following in someone else’s footsteps you will only get where they want to go.
