We’re here to day to launch the CBC’s emergency taskforce on youth suicide and mental health.
On April 28th
The Congressional Black Caucus officially launched an Emergency Taskforce
It will be specifically focused on Youth Suicide and Mental Health
[Bonnie M. Watson Coleman (U.S. Representative):]
Standing with me today are some of the same professionals who first brought this to our attention and I am counting on them to tell you more about the crisis.
[Michael Lindsey (Exec. Dir. of the McSilver Institute):]
Every school in this nation needs a mental health provider… every school. And the number of providers should be proportionate to the number of kids in that school. And yet we often see two or three schools sharing a single provider and that provider may be in school Tuesday… what happens on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday when kids are presenting with mental health crisis.
[Sherry Molock (Professor of Psycholoy, GWU):]
I’m tired that statistics that the first three leading causes of death; homicides, accidents, and suicides are all preventable and we’re not any further along in the progress of ameliorating these things from our community.
[David Johns (Exec. Director, NBJC:]
Unless and until we have conversations that acknowledge that, so many of the challenges our students face in schools are the result of oppression that is connected to their identity. Whether that’s racial or ethnic… or sexual identity and [gender] sexual orientation. We will still see so many of the same problems.
The Taskforce was created by Congresswoman Bonnie Watson [Coleman] the founder of the Caucus on Black Women and Girls
It will feature more than 20 experts from across the country including psychologists, activists, and youth advocates.
The Taskforce includes 12 members of Congress.
It will work for the next year and make recommendations to Congress.
[Bonnie M. Watson Coleman (U.S. Representative):]
It is an Emergency Task Force dedicated to bringing public awareness to the crisis and developing concrete solutions to end it.
