It’s been over three years since the outbreak of Ebola killed over 11,000 people in West Africa. When Ebola hit how was it like?
My father was sick. He got very ill and started to vomit. He was rushed to the Ebola treatment unit. Early the next day we were told he had died.
[Ed Sheeran:]
When was the last time you went to school?
Since he passed away during the Ebola crisis I have not been to school. My mother doesn’t have any money. When I grow up I really want to become a musician. I want to sing for people in churches.
[Ed Sheeran:]
I think that’s going to happen.
Yes.
[Ed Sheeran:]
That’s going to happen, you’ve got a beautiful voice. That’s just one girl, it’s just one – one story and it’s the one girl that came up to talk to us, and it was the smiley-est. And there’s so many kids out here that I’ve gone up to, and sort of tried to speak to. They just shut up. And if she’s the smiley-est one and she’s got got that story – god knows what the other stories are.

This is JD. How long have you been living in the streets?
JD: Six months. It’s hard for me. I don’t want to be living here. I don’t want to be here.
[Ed Sheeran:]
What happened to your mom and dad?
JD: My mother and grandfather were killed by the Ebola virus. My father ran away from me. I want to go to school.
[Ed Sheeran:]
What you want to be when you’re older?
JD: I want to be the president.

You want to be the president? I see. How about that – what would you do if you be the president?
JD: If I were the president, I would build schools, I would feed the community and give them money to buy food for their children.

There is a definite fork in the road. If JD goes to school now, he will learn, he will exceed. But like a couple more years like this and he’s, I think, I said like he’s already quite shut off in the world.
