[Masacre En Tlatelolco 2 De Octubre 1968]

In the summer of 1968 Mexican students take to the streets.

We’d had it up to here with the president.

We were in a pressure cooker that was ready to blow.

Tensions lead to a bloodbath that stuns the nation.

It was horrible people dying all around us.

It felt like a symphony of cries, screams, horror.

It has been called Mexico’s Tiananmen Square

I will never forgive them. Never.

Four decades later, troubling questions remain.

Where did the snipers come from? Who armed them?

Tlatelolco

The Plaza de las Tres Culturas stands on the site of the ancient Aztec city of Tlatelolco. The ruins are overlooked by the Church of Santiago. The modern Mexican Chancery rises behind the church. The Chihuahua apartment building closes off the square. It’s the prefect setting for an ambush.

The Plaza de las Tres Culturas resembles an amphitheater. It is surrounded by tall buildings overlooking a large square.

On October 2, 1968 thousands filled the square, unaware of the danger.

Ignacia Rodriguez
Former student activist

We arrived quite innocently, carrying banners. We go here early and stood there.

Humberto Musacchio
Former student activist

I saw so many people arriving. A few minutes later the square was totally full.

Myrthokleia Gonzales
Former student activist

All types of people were here. Workers, students, neighbors. So many people were here. Some protesters bring their children. Others come with their friends.

I was with my girlfriend, her cousin, and her cousin’s boyfriend.

Jose David Vega
Former student leader

We saw no sign of danger.

In the adjacent streets, the army closes in.

We got word that the army was on the move. But that wasn’t unusual at our meetings.

Tlatelolco was surrounded by tanks, police and army vehicles. But we never thought they would attack an unarmed crowd.

Raul Alvarez
Former student activist

Our meeting began as planned.

Student leaders address the crowd from the third-floor balcony.

I stood here and spoke to them. Then I introduced the first speaker.

From the roof of the church a lone figure acts as a lookout

Helicopters flew over the square. The blades sound like machine guns.

Fausto Trejo
Retired University Professor

The damn chopper shoots a flare

The flare fell right there, next to the church

I saw the flares but I didn’t know what they were. We didn’t know that it was an attack signal

An electric current surged through the crowd.

The leaders yelled ‘Don’t worry, everything’s fine’

That’s when the shooting started

We tried to run toward the church. But the soldiers were already charging against us.

The soldiers run across the Aztec ruins. They block two of the possible exits.

The crowd tries to flee but they are surrounded.

We had nowhere to run. The army came from here and there. They bayonets were drawn.

Machine guns appeared at the roof of the Chihuahua building. They started shooting at all of us down in the square.

People were running in all directions. We yelled ‘Don’t panic, they’re blanks!’ But then we saw people drop to the ground.

It felt like a symphony of cries, screams, horror, curses. We were all trying to hide underneath someone else.

[Transcript Source: LYBIO.net:]

You here the machine gun fire and mind shuts down. We ran and my friend said ‘Drop the banner, dummy!’

I didn’t know what to do. I was in shock.

It was horrible people running everywhere.

People dying all around us. People stumbling over corpses.

I ended up right there. My legs failed me and I couldn’t get up. A boy grabbed me and said: ‘Let’s go, Professor If they see you, you’re dead.”

I was lying on top of bodies. And there were bodies on top of me. I had a girl’s knee against my throat. So I couldn’t stand up. We were all lying there. Some injured, some dead.

The boy stood in front of me and a bullet struck him in the head.

All the women were crying and we tried to console them. We took care of people we didn’t even know.

I don’t know if the bullet came from there, or there but this is where the boy fell. That’s the worst day of my life.

The soldiers on the square also came under fire. They fire back. On the third-floor balcony the student leaders take cover.

We went towards the elevators and there we ran into the men with white gloves.

They encounter men wearing white gloves on the left hand.

They yelled: ‘Get back, get down!’

‘Get down motherfuckers, we’re gonna kill you’ Then the dragged us downstairs. They handed us over to the army.

Hands against the wall they make us pull down our pants.

Almost every student leader is captured that night. Most are beaten.

Eventually the took us in buses to some unknown place.

After dark, they carried away the dead and injured.

Bodies pile up at the city morgue among them women and children. The precise death toll remains a mystery.

It was inconceivable that even a genocide government would commit such a crime. We just never expected it.
