When you make it to the Bundesliga, I think the most important thing is to stay normal and to never lose sight of your objective. On the pitch as well as off it there are a few things you have to watch out for and I try to keep them in mind, so that I can set a good example. When you play for your country it’s a whole different mindset – it’s your country. Ever since I started with the U 15 Juniors, it’s always been something special. Especially on the youth teams, and when you play your first international. That’s another highlight too of course. Playing for your country is something really special. It’s a fantastic country and you try to live up to that. And try to give something back. And that’s something you can do on the pitch. For your country, for the fans, for every person in Germany. On the youth team you had to make a lot of sacrifices. There was always the game on Sunday and training three or four times a week. And school on top of that – so self-discipline was really important. Plus knowing what you really want. Self-discipline, and learning to do without things, are two very important attributes.
When I was injured I was alone a lot of course and did my exercise programmes. I simply had to deal with the situation and my family and friends were a great help at that stage. It wasn’t an ordinary injury, and at first I couldn’t really deal with it. But it’s important to fight your way through things and to get up again after you’ve been knocked down. A boxer needs a lot of fighting spirit, lots of ambition, and will power. And those are the sort of qualities you need as a footballer. And as a person too, of course. Like with me and my injury: You’re on your own, and you have to get back to your original level of fitness. It can take weeks, sometimes even months. So there are lots of parallels with a boxer: Standing in the ring, having to watch out every second that nothing happens to him.

My family, and my friends all treat me just the same as ever. And I think that’s really important, because then I always know what really counts. My future aims in my career? Especially considering my injury, I just want to stay healthy and to play as many games as possible. No-one plays football without wanting to win a title. And I’m no different – I want to win the Champions League sometime. And the World Cup, and the European Championship. That’s what every football player dreams of doing and that’s what I’m working towards.
I’m grateful. Grateful that I’m healthy, that I can play – and that I can play for Germany. Because it’s always important to appreciate what you’ve got.
