It’s a real privilege to be amongst these animals, and with African elephants so close. They are so special and it’s impossible not to form an instant bond with them. They are just quite simply gorgeous. This little furry coat here, I could just stroke all day, and these trunks are so soft, really delicate and dexterous and the way they just suck your fingers as well for the re-assurance very, very sweet. Hey, very sweet.
The mission of the Elephant Orphanage Project is to rescue, rehabilitate and release orphaned elephants back into the wild. Tafika was rescued in South Luangwa. He had fallen into a pit and become isolated from his herd. It was very traumatic for him, obviously losing his family being stuck in a hole.
You too you are very nice, don’t you get jealous, you get plenty of attention, I’m sure, trunks everywhere. If they stay this size, it’d be perfect having your back garden, but unfortunately they grow quite big. And this is where they belong. This is really on the African plains, in the African bush safe, looked after and respected.

The care and the attention the elephants need is quite a lot. They actually require milk feeds every three hours. So there is a lot of monitoring them constantly and just generally watching the behavior of the elephants making sure that they are healthy. I just ask you to do give that stir for me, while I get some cold water.
It’s very nice it’s called porridge to be honest, two layers of oats in it. It’s been a while since I have porridge to be honest. Okay, it’s going to get clumpy here.
Umm, that is it. Right, I think Tafika is very hungry.
Great. Ours is a bit different. I’ve never bottle-fed a baby elephant before so I am looking forward to this. Here you go. And we go. Oh, up, up, up. He can’t suck it down. Tafika is hungry here, he is just really sucking hard on the teat and it’s going down in a flash and very content, are you?
He has got a big appetite for little elephant.
I say he his brilliant and fun. Really, really great. Hold for a in a second. All right, all right, all right, very, very eager. Now you go. This is definitely want to add to my list bottle feeding a baby elephant. Fantastic! I have fed a plenty of young before, but never, never an elephant. All done, you’ve finished, yes, you have. Wow.
He wanted more.
Obviously, quite hungry. Just nozzling the breast to get that milk down quite clearly. Of course this is much harder than elephant breasts, it’s just appearances. Okay, all right.

We are pretty confident that in this location they’ve got very good chances of meeting with other herds and actually forming part of that social structure. We imagine that they will always remember this place, having spent the majority of their formative years here, and they might have to come back and visit us sometime at a time. Essentially, we think they will live in the wild and that is – that is our purpose of being here.
