On January 18, 2013, PHS gave out its senior class awards (Class Clown, Most Likely to Succeed, etc.)
My son Jacob won the award for Class Actor
In front of a crowd of 300+ high school students, as well as parents and teachers, Jacob said something in his acceptance speech that took more guts to do than anything I’ve ever attempted in my life.
When I originally edited this video, it was for the purpose of allowing my FB friends to see it, while I appreciate all the comments about what a great parent I am (and I do keep showing those to Jacob) even though they’re not necessary, my wife, Laura, is just as supportive and has as much to do with Jacob’s confidence as anyone.

So I would like to thank everyone for voting me Class Actor, sure I’ve been in a few plays and musicals uh, but more importantly I have been acting every single day of my life. You see, I’ve been acting as someone I’m not. Most of you see me everyday; you see me acting the part of straight Jacob when I’m in fact a LGBT teen. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender. Unlike a millions of other LGBT teens who have had to act every day to avoid verbal harrassment, physical violence, I’m not gonna do it anymore. Its time to end the hate in our society and accept the people for who they are regardless of their sex, race, orientation or whatever else may be holding back love and friendship. So take me, leave me, move me out of the way because I am what I am and that’s how I’m gonna act now.
The reaction of the students is testimony to the progress we’ve make in our society to respect everyone. But we still have a long way to go. Jacob made this statement where he made it and when he made it to let other LGBT teens know they’re not alone and that sometime not too far, we hope, down the road, no kid will ever have to act as someone they’re not to avoid being bullied, harassed, or assaulted.
