Edward Regan Murphy: Hi, I am Eddie Murphy um… Before I even go into this? Lets give a round of applause for all the winners tonight, ah, yeah. And the – and the losers tonight too, ‘cause, yes to the losers. I know how it feels to be a loser, I know you got your tux on and feel real real stupid right now. For the losers you’ve got to make them feel good.
At first, When they came to me and said they wanted me to present the award for Best Picture, my management came they told me that the Academy had picked me and my first reaction was to say no, I ain’t going. And I said – my manager said: But why? I have a white manager, that’s how he talks. But why? And I said uh… I said I’m not going because they have recognized black people in the Motion Pictures.
He said: what are you talking about, black people won Oscars. I said well black actors and actresses had won Oscars throughout 60 years it was like the, I think, Hattie McDaniel has won the first one, then uh… Sidney Poitier won one, and Louis Gossett had won one. And I’ll probably never win an Oscar for saying this. But hey, what the hey I gotta say it, uh… actually I might not even be in trouble, because the way it’s been going it’s about every 20 years we get one, so we ain’t due for about – for about 2004, so… by that time this will all blow over.
I said I wasn’t going, my management said, you just have to go because you can’t snuff The Academy. So I came out here to do – give the award. I said – but I just feel that we haven’t been recognized as a people. I just want you to know that I’m going to give this award, but black people will not ride the caboose of society, and we will not bring up the rear anymore, and I want you to recognize us.
He said well fine it’s done. I said no, when will I have to be there? He said, well you have to get there about nine or ten plus, because it’s the last award of evening, so. I am here now.
