About 3 years ago I was in a fatal bus crash in India after the vehicle flipped off the highway and two people died. I try not to tell this story often because I still have flashbacks and nightmares about it. Since that day, I haven’t stepped a long haul bus because street safety has become an alarming concern for me.
India’s neighboring country is Bangladesh which I had the chance to visit in April last year.
Welcome to Bangladesh!
We are here at New Market, one of the oldest markets in Bangladesh. Is that right?
Yeah it is.
I loved Bangladesh and all the amazing sites delicious foods.
We are having chicken masala and naan roti.
And kind people but much like India, I was shocked by the hectic, unregulated and extremely unsafe roads
Watch both sides of the road before you cross…
Oh I’m watching. I’m watching every side, don’t worry.
It was like chaos of Delhi or Bombay X5 in terms of honking horns, horrible drivers and overall safety.
If I don’t watch where I’m going, I’m really going get hit…
Today I’d like to use my platform to bring awareness to something happening right now in Dhaka which is virtually going unnoticed on the news because the government shut down the internet. Last week, two students in Dhaka got hit by a speeding bus and were killed. Every day since then, thousands of students haves hit the streets to demand for safer roads. They blocked several major intersections and rallied in rainy weather to make their voices heard.
“WE WANT JUSTICE”
“WE WANT JUSTICE”
Yesterday alone, more than 100 students as young as 13 years old were injured after police fired rubber bullets and tear gas at them and the death count is rapidly rising. Instead of listening and giving the students justice, the government shut down the internet, and phone services and the police denied how they treated they students. Thanks to thousands of messages and emails I’ve received from Bangladeshis, the world quickly got out to me.
Girls are getting raped every day, and thrown out in the lake and all this for what, road safety?
There’s like almost 4,000 people died last year on the road accident. We can’t take it anymore, man.
One thing I know for sure, is that the roads in Bangladesh need to be fixed immediately or else bigger problems are bound to keep happening.
All these horns, man
I’m a victim of a severe bush crash & nobody else, whether it be in Bangladesh, Thailand, Brazil or the Sates should have to fear death when entering the road.
