Hello. My name is John Early and I am thrilled to be sitting here today with the legendary Cynthia Nixon. She is an actor, activist and lifelong New Yorker currently running for Governor. Cynthia, it is an honor. Thank you for speaking with me today.
Cynthia Nixon: Thank you, John. I’m so happy to be here.
John Early: First and foremost, Miranda.
Cynthia Nixon: Cynthia.
John Early: [beep]
Cynthia Nixon: It happens.
John Early: Yeah. I know you wanted to shift the focus away from Sex and the City questions.
Cynthia Nixon: Right.
John Early: And with that in mind and I couldn’t help but wonder what are you going to do about New York City’s housing crisis?
Cynthia Nixon: I see what you did there.
John Early: Thank you.
Cynthia Nixon: But I’m glad you asked. Our campaign has proposed the most progressive and expansive tenant protection program in the entire country. It will provide affordable housing to more than 9 million New Yorkers and prevent thousands of evictions.
John Early: Speaking of housing, so sorry. How could Carrie afford to live on the Upper East Side when she literally wrote like one column per week?
Cynthia Nixon: Look, I don’t know how Carrie could afford to do that.
John Early: Right. Yeah.
Cynthia Nixon: But what I do know is that too many New Yorkers can’t afford to live in the neighborhood or even in the city where they grew up. And that’s why when I’m Governor I will strengthen and expand our rent laws to protect affordable housing for millions of New Yorkers.
John Early: So why run for public office? I mean, you’re one Oscar away from completing your EGOT?
Cynthia Nixon: I am grateful for my acting career.
John Early: Me too.
Cynthia Nixon: But I don’t want another award. I want to serve the people of New York. There are so many issues facing our state from education, climate change and mass incarceration…
John Early: Later that day I got to thinking if our policies can change to create a better future, can my love life be far behind?
my love life would be far behind
And in a world where politics is entertainment and entertainment is politics…
Cynthia Nixon: John? Are you doing a Carrie Bradshaw inner monologue?
John Early: No.
Cynthia Nixon: I appreciate your love of Sex and the City, but I would really appreciate if you could focus on the issues that are at the heart of this campaign.
John Early: Absolutely, of course.
Cynthia Nixon: So no more Sex and the City questions, right?
John Early: Oh my God, of course not.
Cynthia Nixon: Thanks.
John Early: Is Brady’s name Brady Brady or Brady Hobbes Brady? Sorry.
Cynthia Nixon: Okay.
John Early: Just because when you and Steve Brady you weren’t together so it would have been Brady Hobbes. But then you got back together then got married, so that he’d technically be Brady Brady.
Cynthia Nixon: I am not Miranda. I am not a corporate lawyer. I am not Carrie’s BFF. I’m an actor and an activist who has spent two decades fighting for LGBTQ equality and women’s rights and better public schools across New York State.
John Early: Yeah, sorry.
Cynthia Nixon: My hair isn’t even red.
John Early: Why isn’t it red?
Cynthia Nixon: Because I’m Cynthia, I’m a blonde and I would like to be your next Governor. I actually have a rally for reproductive rights, I’m gonna be speaking that in a little bit.
John Early: Cynthia, wait! I’m so sorry that I got confused.
Cynthia Nixon: That’s okay, John.
John Early: Yeah.
Cynthia Nixon: I just – please don’t forget to vote in the Democratic primary on September 13th.
John Early: September 13th.
Cynthia Nixon: Thanks so much.
John Early: Thank you so much.
Cynthia Nixon: Okay. Great.
John Early: Yeah.
Later that day I got to thinking about my conversation with Cynthia. If she’s not actually Miranda or thirsty for an EGOT
she’s not actually Miranda or thirsty for an EGOT
shouldn’t we be focusing on her platform not her IMDb credits? And instead of obsessing about a third Sex and the City film, shouldn’t we be obsessing about systemic and justices like mass incarceration and underfunded schools?
incarceration and underfunded schools?
And that’s why I’m voting for Cynthia Nixon and I couldn’t help but wonder if you’ll join me.
