It’s my honor to announce that six month old conjoined twins A’zhari and A’zhiah Jones were successfully separated yesterday by a remarkable team of surgeons and specialist here at Children’s hospital of Richmond at VCU. The complex multifaceted, phased operation surgery, speaks volumes to the depth and breadth of talent and expertise that resides here in this medical center.

We’re fortunate that they had anatomy that was favorable to separation. It is quite rare. Certainly those that survive and then are able to be separated is quite less than one in a million.

I’d like to thank Dr. Lanning, Dr. Rhodes, and all of the doctors and nurses that helped take care of my daughters. This was a successful surgery and I would like to thank all the nurses that made sure not only were my daughters well taken care of but also me. They were very good support and they all allowed me to cry on their shoulders.

We kind of came up with a novel idea as to separate their liver which was the site of the problem which with this cross circulation and leave their hearts as it is and it worked. And it’s never been published before in the literature for this sort of stage separation for this type of twins. So we’re very excited that it worked out well. Sure our experience from the Tapia girls really educated us about what we could do with the liver, so we’re excited and happy to share our experience with the medical world.

I’m overwhelmed and I just can’t thank everybody enough.

We’re optimistic to have – they’ll have a full recovery and be happy healthy little girls when they grow up. We really enjoyed the challenge and an ability to provide this care as a team, and certainly look forward to future opportunities.
