Hello Facebook and Twitter. On October 11th of last year, you unpublished and/or suspended my news organization, the Anti Media, where I’m editor-in-chief from your platforms. Our Facebook page with over 2 million followers was removed from Facebook and just hours later we were cut from Twitter and so was my personal account. We still haven’t been told the real reasons why, but I have been informed that I’m permanently suspended from Twitter.

to me
Hi Nick,
Great! Here is $500 worth of ad credit to use towards boosting instant articles posts. This should help you get vamped up! Keep in mind that it needs to be spent by September 30th so you have 1.5 weeks before the code expires!
The goal is to measure your revenue before boosting and after to see if boosting posts gives you incremental revenue lift. Any information on when boosting works best, whether its with a viral post or a newly posted article, etc.,, is also great. Please track your revenue as you run this test. It may be helpful to use a separate placement ID to separate the earnings as well.
The ad credit code is: Let me know if you have any questions or if you’d like to chat about kicking this off. I look forward to syncing up on the results.
As a side note, I’ve been seeing your week over week performance has been seeing a slight decline. Wanted to check in and see if this was natural fluctuations or if you and your team have made any adjustments to posting strategy, changes to content, or anything else?
Best,
[Carey Wedler:] Source: LYBIO.net
But let’s start with you Facebook, you claimed Anti Media was removed for inauthentic and misleading behavior. Now I’m wildly curious how we could be guilty of those things when just a couple months earlier you assigned us a representative to help us grow our page and also gave us free advertising, which we redeemed just two weeks before the purge. That would seem to imply you approved of our content and practices. Could it be that our founder had a few accounts he used on our page or maybe that we shared our content on other pages that also had access to share on ours, maybe but we don’t know because you won’t tell us and you never gave us a warning.
One common type of spam has been posts that hawk fraudulent products like fake sunglasses or weight loss “remedies.” But a lot of the spam we see today is different. The people behind it create networks of Pages using fake accounts or multiple accounts with the same names. They post clickbait posts on these Pages to drive people to websites that are entirely separate from Facebook and seem legitimate, but are actually ad farms. The people behind the activity also post the same clickbait posts in dozens of Facebook Groups, often hundreds of times in a short period, to drum up traffic for their websites. And they often use their fake accounts to generate fake likes and shares. This artificially inflates engagement for their inauthentic Pages and the posts they share, misleading inflates engagement for their inauthentic Pages and the posts they share, misleading people about their popularity and improving their ranking in News Feed. This activity goes against what people expect on Facebook, and it violates our policies against spam.
Facebook made $39.9 billion in ad revenue in 2017
Were talking about ads on Facebook, because Facebook is an advertising juggernaut. Facebook made $39.9 billion in ad revenue in 2017, which is more than just about every other tech company that’s not Google.

Your press release also claims that in your purge of hundreds of political pages, you remove people for sending users to add forms with clickbait, which first of all we didn’t do. We actually have a strict policy against clickbait and sensationalism. And besides Facebook, you of all organizations should know ads are essential to surviving as a business. And second of all if the ad services we used ever were too invasive, we removed them because they were glitches because we don’t like invasive clickbait advertising, but at least you provided a reason from the get-go. I will give you that, even though you still haven’t responded to our appeal and even though it’s been over three months and even though you invited us to join you in a partnership.

The Twitter Rules
We believe that everyone should have the power to create and share ideas and information instantly, without barriers. In order to protect the experience and safety of people who use Twitter, there are some limitations on the type of content and behavior that we allow. These limitations are set forth in the Twitter Rules below.
The Twitter Rules (along with all incorporated policies), Privacy Policy, and Terms of Service collectively make up the “Twitter User Agreement” that governs a user’s access to and use of Twitter’s services.

This includes, but is not limited to, threatening or promoting terrorism. You also may not affiliate with organizations promoting terrorism. You also may not affiliate with organizations that — whether by their own statements or activity both on and off the platform — use or promote violence against civilians to further their causes.

Facebook funds news shows from ABC, Fox, CNN and more
Facebook is now a news producer, financially at least.
The social network on Wednesday announced its first major foray into funding journalism with a series of video news programs from a variety of media companies.
If that sounds to be a scary prospect, the social media giant points out in a new blog that the editorial content is up to the partners involved. Will Facebook be willing to fund news that might be critical of its own practices? That’s not been addressed.
The social media giant, which has been under fire for sharing user data with Chinese device makers and for allowing fake news to proliferate on the platform, is funding shows from Fox News and ABC News, among others.

Twitter on the other hand you guys told me nothing from the start, which left me to try to figure it out for myself. What rules violations could have possibly gotten me and my news organization removed. Umm ummm ummm… Let me think really hard here. Did I or Anti Media promote violence? Nope. In fact, we actively advocate against it. Unlike the countless people and politicians, who directly violate the Twitter rules by associating with organizations whether by their own statements or activity both on and off the platform that user promote violence against civilians to further their causes, nope. These people and politicians remain on Twitter. Did we depict graphic violence? No. I actually stopped putting images of kids killed by U.S. bombs in my videos because I realized that kind of presentation could get me flagged. Did we promote misleading fake news? Again, no. Unlike many outlets that remain on your platform, many of which spread disinformation that directly promoted and led to mass violence against civilians. In fact, Facebook, you guys gave those instigators even more reach propping them up as reliable sources. Did we promote hate speech also no, in fact sometimes I even talk about love and emotional healing. This is a departure for many of the people still allowed on your platforms, who are violating that rule. Sirs and Madams, lords and masters of Facebook and Twitter what did we do, there has to be a good reason for you to delete us without any kind of warning.

Exclusive: Is Facebook doing enough to stop election meddling? 03:39
New York (CNN) – Facebook on Thursday, just weeks before the US midterm elections, announced that it had removed more than 800 pages and accounts that the company said violated its rules “against spam and coordinated inauthentic behaviour.”
The company made the announcement In a blog post which said that “increasingly” spam networks have started using “sensational political content — regardless of its political slant — to build an audience and drive traffic to their websites.”
“And like the politically motivated activity we’ve seen, the ‘news’ stories or opinions these accounts and Pages share are often indistinguishable from legitimate political debate,” the Facebook blog post said.
Los Angeles Times
Facebook said it was removing the publishers and accounts not because of the type of content they posted, but because of the behaviors they engaged in, including spamming Facebook groups with identical pieces of content and using fake profiles.
“Today, we’re removing 559 Pages and 251 accounts that have consistently broken our rules against spam and coordinated inauthentic behavior,” the company said in a blog post. “People will only share on Facebook if they feel safe and trust the connections they make here.”
Today, we’re removing 559 Pages and 251 accounts that have consistently broken our rules against spam and coordinated inauthentic behavior. Given the activity we’ve seen — and its timing ahead of the US midterm elections — we wanted to give some details about the types of behavior that led to this action. Many were using fake accounts or multiple accounts with the same names and posted massive amounts of content across a network of Groups and Pages to drive traffic to their websites. Many used the same techniques to make their content appear more popular on Facebook than it really was. Others were ad farms using Facebook to mislead people into thinking that they were forums for legitimate political debate.

Russian propaganda effort helped spread ‘fake news’ during election, experts say
By Craig Timberg
November 24, 2016
Editor’s Note: The Washington Post on Nov. 24 published a story on the work of four sets of researchers who have examined what they say are Russian propaganda efforts to undermine American democracy and interests. One of them was PropOrNot, a group that insists on public anonymity, which issued a report identifying more than 200 websites that, in its view, wittingly or unwittingly published or echoed Russian propaganda. A number of those sites have objected to being included on PropOrNot’s list, and some of the sites, as well as others not on the list, have publicly challenged the group’s methodology and conclusions. The Post, which did not name any of the sites, does not itself vouch for the validity of PropOrNot’s findings regarding any individual media outlet, nor did the article purport to do so. Since publication of The Post’s story, PropOrNot has removed some sites from its list.
[Carey Wedler:] Source: LYBIO.net
The likes of the Los Angeles Times and CNN made it sound really legitimate when they quoted and copied and pasted Facebook’s press release without talking to a single banned individual or organization. Are we Russian bots or Asians trying to undermine American democracy for Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, again no. Even though The Washington Post put out a hit piece on us and other anti-war outlets in 2016 that they had to later walk back because it was such an assault on basic journalistic practices.

Oh wait, wait hold on, Facebook might have ghosted us, but Twitter got back to me, not Anti Media with a fabricated reason and confirming your suspension of my account Twitter you claimed I behaved in a manner intended to artificially amplifier suppress information. No, no I didn’t. I posted on Twitter like once every two weeks and I barely even knew how to upload a video, let alone artificially warp information. Oh, wait, wait. Here it is. I engaged in behavior that disrupted people’s experience on Twitter. Yep, this must be it because I absolutely [fucking] / [beep] did try to be disruptive. I tried to disrupt the U.S. war machine and people’s blind support for it along with their unquestioning submission to government power. You got me I did it. I tried to disrupt user experiences on Twitter and so did the Anti Media, which again still hasn’t heard back on that appeal, but to others on Twitter not do the same, is Donald Trump not disruptive, Kanye West, wars between pop stars being nasty to each other. Twitter by nature is disruptive. Twitter is a cacophony of rage and screaming and people being cruel and horrible to each other, but calling for peace and justice albeit in a blunt way is what warrant suspension.

When The Washington Post put out that hit peace in 2016 that included Anti Media, I had a mini existential crisis. Had I forgotten signing up to be a stooge for Putin, was I unwittingly helping the Russian government, had I lost my journalistic integrity, it took two legitimate journalists calling them out to help me remember I cover the stories I do because I genuinely care, but this time around I have no doubt in my mind that the reason you gave for your coordinated bans and suspensions are fabricated, which leads me to wonder the real reasons why.

Announcing New Election Partnership With the Atlantic Council***
“Have some integrity, give the money back” is what the Mad World founders told Roose.
But soon, mere algorithmic changes wouldn’t be enough, and the age of outright bans began. On May 17th, Facebook announced it would be working with the Atlantic Council.
Often described by critics as the unofficial lobby group of NATO, the council is a bipartisan rogues’ gallery of senior military leaders, neocons and ex-spies. Former heads of the CIA on its board include Michael Hayden, R. James Woolsey, Leon Panetta and Michael Morell, who was in line to be Hillary Clinton’s CIA chief.
The council is backed financially by weapons-makers like Raytheon, energy titans like Exxon-Mobil and banks like JPMorgan Chase. It also accepts funds from multiple foreign countries, some of them with less-than-sterling reputations for human rights and — notably — press freedoms.

Facebook Says It Is Deleting Accounts at the Direction of the U.S. and Israeli Governments
The sites were all over the map politically. Some, like the Trump-supporting Nation in Distress, had claimed Obama would declare martial law if Trump won in 2016. Others, like Reverb and Blue State Daily, were straight-up, Democrat-talking-point sites that ripped Trump and cheered the blues.
Many others, like the L.A.-based Free Thought Project and Anti-Media, were anti-war, focused on police brutality or drug laws, and dismissive of establishment politics in general. Targeting the latter sites to prevent election meddling seemed odd, since they were openly disinterested in elections. “If anything, we try to get people to think beyond the two parties,” says Jason Bassler, a 37-year-old activist who runs the Free Thought Project.
Eric Goldman of the Santa Clara University School of Law calls the problem “soft censorship,” adding, “We’re seeing removal of content that isn’t illegal but the government doesn’t like. It’s a backdoor form of censorship.”
When Rolling Stone asked the Atlantic Council about the apparent contradiction of advising Facebook on press practices when it is funded by numerous speech-squelching foreign governments, it replied that donors must submit in writing to strict terms. The statement reads:
“[The] Atlantic Council is accepting the contribution on condition that the Atlantic Council retains intellectual independence and control over any content funded in whole or in part by the contribution.”
Around the same time the partnership was announced, Facebook made a donation to the Atlantic Council between $500,000 and $999,000, placing it among the biggest donors to the think tank.
[Carey Wedler:] Source: LYBIO.net
Maybe you’re understandably trying to avoid government intervention and imposed a broad stroke of purges to prove you’re taking responsibility for your alleged role in handing the election to Trump. For what it’s worth, I think those allegations are unfair regardless avoiding government intrusions could be behind the purge, but again I can’t prove it, maybe you’re trying to sanitize public opinion that doesn’t fit neatly into the acceptable established thought bubbles, but again I can’t prove it. So I would never claim something like that with any kind of certainty. Clearly, I don’t know why I was banned and suspended. I would love to know. If there’s something I did that violated your standards and you can point to the specifics, I will gladly eat my words and I will even apologize for calling you out, but otherwise whether intentional or not – you guys are limiting legitimate authentic voices in the name of saving democracy while serving the current ruling class and the purge I was caught up in is just the tip of the iceberg.
