Many of my colleagues rely on public assistance to survive and some are homeless. May name is Cynthia Murray. I’m a 19 year Walmart associate and I live in Hyattsvilee, Maryland. I grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I was a steel work. I worked in the canteen. The closing of the steel mills killed Pittsburgh. It was devastating. It put out a lot of people, lots of jobs. So I went to work for Walmart.
You don’t scare me… I work for … Walmart
That’s why I came here. One day, a young girl, she came by my desk and she was in tears. I mean they had broken here, and when I say broken, her spirit was – she quit that day. And she was in tears and she talked about “They’re coming for you next.”

The next morning they called me into the office. So my co-manager started telling me, “Well, you’re going to have to do what I tell you to do.” What I was going to do is be a door greeter because I had a hard time walking, I got permanent nerve damage in my back.
So she says to me, “Well, you’re going to have to lift this, that, and the other.” I said, “No, I have a medical.” She threw an empty folder across the table at me. There was nothing in it. And I’m like, really? After five years, there’s nothing in my file? So I told her, I said, “Well if you need, I can call my attorney and he can fax you my medical records.”
She stood up on the desk and spit is coming out her mouth, and she’s screaming at me. I said, “Oh, this is over. This ain’t how you treat people. It’s over.” And I left. That’s when I decided I couldn’t be silent. Workers need to gather together. They need to say, “We won’t take this anymore. We need better.”
One girl came and told me she was crying, it way payday. She said, “I gotta go home and pay my rend today.” She said, “But I have no groceries to take for my kid. I can’t feed my daughter tonight when I go home.” The Waltons make $25,000 a minute and most of the workers do not make that in a year. And that’s a shame. They got enough money to live on the rest of their life. But you got workers who can’t even afford to buy food at the end of the day.

Walmart is the major beneficiary of welfare in America. Many of their employees have to go on Medicaid, food stamps, or subsidized housing. Who do you think pays for the food stamps, Madicaid? You do.

That is unacceptable. The Waltons’ greed must end. We need people like Bernie Sanders. Bernie has stood for workers across the country, working families. You know, this is the first time that a senator has decided to come with us and stand up and do our board proposal that we have. Join me and Bernie Sanders in demanding that the wealthiest family in America pay all their workers a living wage $15 an hour.
This is the time for the workers right now. It’s time for our officials to stand with the people that elected them. And I say when 2020 comes, our voice should be heard loud and clear that we no longer are going to take what they’ve been doing o us.
join the movement.
