What was it like sitting there, obviously not winning but what a show.
[Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch (July 19, 1976):]
Fantastic, uh…I won…we all won…anyone who is sitting in that audience won, there’s no such thing as 80% of losers when it comes to being nominated for an Oscar which is what you’re basically looking at if you don’t win an award, probably more than that, my maths ain’t great, unlike the character I played so the point is I’m there to be uh…acknowledged for performing a man who is exceptionally important to all of our lives, who has dealt an incredibly unjust blow in his life who met the end of his miseries with suicide and we’re there saying things that he wasn’t able to – he would of shunt with – from horror – with horror from any of this or a noise. Its not who he was and weirdly on the inside it’s not who I am at all either but part my exterior what I have to do is actor as my job is this.
And to be honest, when it comes to talking about the film and this role and this particular human being Alan Turing I’m happy to do it, I don’t care how much noise I have to make to do it and you know, its not just my noise it’s the noise of people trumping in there hundreds, hundreds thousands, millions to go and see this film, it’s become a huge huge hit. And we’re just – we’re so thrilled as artists that we got any kind of acknowledgement tonight by being nominated and basically it’s just another stepping stone to get this man the recognition his life deserves; his work, what he suffered, but what he brought to the world as a father of computer science as a gay icon and as a war hero, somebody who helped bring about the end to the second world war. And you know – to be part of a film that tells that story is privilege enough. We all won the minute we got this job, the minute we – we all came together as a family to make the film so basically Grahams win basically that it, that’s it for all of us and what he said uh, you know, that this is a night for hyper-ball and exaggeration but I guarantee that’s probably saved somebody life, what he said.
It was very emotional, what’s it?

At sixteen he nearly committed suicide and to pull back from that and acknowledge that he achieved what he’d achieve by standing on stage having won an Oscar and what an Oscar to win – Best Adapted Screenplay usually means you write it from an exceptional novel and George’s book is brilliant – it ain’t no film script, what Graham did was exceptional, exceptional, its an original piece of work, whether its an adapted piece of work – he deserves that Oscar hands down and I am so so thrilled for him. And it – it felt, we all felt we were on stage with him. It was beautiful.
