When people are taking to the streets in Madrid, Brussels, Cairo, Beirut, they are not claiming what we, convinced socialists like us, defend. People are claiming against the consequences that the problem of free-market capitalism has caused. Unfortunately, what really matters is the fact that we, socialists of the world, are not the ones who have encouraged people to take to the streets. And what should grieve us is that. People are asking for democracy, People are calling for freedom, People are asking for fraternity, People are asking for public education and public health care and we are not there.
I think it’s very important that this socialist family thinks about where we are. And I would also say that I am very surprised how we intend to foster the revolution from a five star hotel in Cascais, arriving in luxury cars. I wonder if we can really give citizens an answer when you, political leaders, say that you understand them, that you suffer because “we are socialists”. Do we really feel the pain being here in a five star hotel? Do we really understand what we are asking the world from a five star hotel? Are we really ready to give that image to the world?
Of course, we young people don’t agree with you when you take these decisions and we are not going to support you on that sense. We are here to work. And I also take this opportunity to say that it’s very sad having to ask on our knees for being able to speak here in this forum it is very sad having to ask on our knees for being listened in each of your politic organizations. Because you don’t want to listen to us. Young people are not only to work as staff just like the Portuguese partners have done here. Young people are here to support you, to work with you and for standing up for you in the street.
Because now we young people in the world are paying the consequences, those who don’t have jobs, those who can’t emancipate ourselves, those who can’t get pregnant at the age of 30 because we are unemployed, despite being the best-educated generation in all the world we are committed to you here. And you, the leaders, wrongly called leaders because you are responsible not just pretty faces, you are responsible for what is happening, you should use us to sit with us and let us express what we want and what we have to offer.
We are not here only to applaud your speeches, we are not here only to fill your places and spaces with pretty faces and young faces, we are not here just to put up the posters. The youth of your organizations, those who have to convey the message, should not be those chosen by you because they are very pleasant and very complicit to you. The young people to whom you have to give voice should be elected in democratic processes at your organizations. And yes, unfortunately we are too dependent on the parties because we also need financing to be free.

And here, at this time, I would like to say that the youth of the Socialist International have no support of the Socialist International. Later your mouths will be plenty of speeches talking about youth unemployment, saying that you care very much about youth: but you are not worried about us at all, because we are here and you don’t even have come to us to ask what is our point of view. We have much to say because people are interested to know what young people think, because we are the ones who are paying the consequences of your actions or your inaction.
