THE KITCHEN COUNCILLORS
Last year, water and sewer rates in Bancroft, Ontario went up 53 percent.
Many residents on low incomes couldn’t pay.
On January 9, 2018, a group organized by the Gnomes for Justice and Equality came together to protest the increase.
They gathered outside a building where the town council was holding its monthly meeting.
The opening session was closed to the public. But the group knocked three times, asking to come in.
When they found the door was unlocked, they entered.
At that point, all but one of the councillors retreated to the kitchen and closed the doors.
Here’s what happened next.
Lori Bird: LYBIO.net
Wow! This is very odd to speak to one councillor…
Oh, no we are not speaking to one councilor.
Lori Bird:
Others, are they back in the kitchen?
They are back in the kitchen.
Lori Bird:
Kitchen councillors? My name is Lori Bird. My name is Lor Bird. And as you know, most of you will know that I’m the Executive Director for the Food Bank. And I can’t even express to you what we’re seeing in the frontlines right now. Um…
It is been such an incredible increase since last year. From feeding just over Christmas last year in around 100 people we now fed 300 this year. And I didn’t see any of you there to help. And to support what’s happening in this little community. And all I’m asking is that you have the courage to come forward and really hear us.
We’re not here to cause trouble. We’re just here to have a voice.
And it would be really great, if you guys could just come out of that kitchen and hear what we have to say. Because it’s taking a lot of courage for us to do this and we need your courage.
[Citizen:]
At a basic income of $741 a month and you deduct rent for $550, where is the money left for these ridiculous prices, you will not get high vote again this year. Thank you.
My name is Beren. You guys know who I am, most of you should anyway. Yeah, it took us a lot of courage to come out here and speak to you. You all are representatives here locally, get out of here. We’re here to face you.
Do you know that my hydro has gone up 300% in four years. My check has gone up $26, my water now I’m getting a note I have to pay three times what I usually pay. And my water is being held for ransom. I’m fighting – come on out and fight me – let’s discuss this, I’m not paying your ransom.
Thank you.
My name is Dan Valo. I want to remind you guys, that you don’t work for the province, you don’t work for the county, you actually don’t even work for the town, you work for the people of this town, the people that elected you. Hiding behind the doors is not representing me.
My name is Jake Giesek, I’m presently a student at Loyalist College studying math, English and sciences. How dare you [beep]?
[Councillor’s name removed.]
You’re nothing but a bully. We don’t tolerate bullies in this community. How dare you relate your father’s experiences to this day and age, nothing against your father and I’m sure he was a hard working man.
But as much as I studied math, I still can’t get my hand around these numbers so I think it is you sir, that is living in a fantasy land.
Where do I start, my daughters is going to be 18 next month folks, I was all her income, she like to go to college but guess what she go to school full time, she works full time to help her mother out. How does she go to college and help her mother, she has to stay home – to how pay for this water. How does my kids eat, you take that away.
My name is Pip Stron, I’ve been silent for a long time, it’s not necessarily my issue because I don’t live in town and I’m on a well but water, water, water, we live – this is like a floating geography map. There are so much water here and there’s a woman here, I believe she’s on social assistance, she’s paying $225 a month for her water bills. Are you guys insane that’s exactly why you’ll be glad to hear I’m leaving Bancroft.
Thank you.
My name is Eric Wyner. I think there are chickens in the kitchen. [Laughing Bawk Bawk] When are those chickens come out? There’s only one counselor out here who has the guts to hear what we have to say. Why don’t you try and living out the wages some of the people in this town have to live on and paying these ridiculous water bills, why don’t you come out and face your constituents rather than hiding in your kitchen.
My name is [indiscernible]. We have a ritual when things die we cut our here. And I think today humanity, humility and everything that these councillors are doing in that kitchen, something has died in our community. So here give it to her.
Oh my god!
Shame. Shame. Shame.
Shame. Shame. Shame.
