An important part of our culture in the United States is that we feel that anyone who works hard gives it their best shot will have a fair chance of success, making it to the middle class or beyond.
That’s how I think the United States has been so successful in incorporating immigrants into our society and that’s led to many advances in our country.
Over the past three decades however we’ve seen a tremendous change in our distribution of income. We’ve seen the middle hollowing out. We’ve seen an increase at the very top and an increase of the number of people at the bottom.
And this is creating a gap in terms of opportunities it’s increasingly more difficult for children born to more disadvantaged circumstances to get the kinds of education – to get the kinds of resources that they need to compete successfully in a modern economy.
So that’s why I think if we don’t make a concerted effort to try to provide more opportunities, we are at risk of losing what makes the United States so unique – the American dream.
