Part of my PhD project I’m looking at cell movement and for this you obviously need a microscope and the kind of microscopes typically used for this kind of work are fairly expensive, ranging from £5,000 to upwards of £100,000 if you want a really good one, being restricted by budget and being a PhD student I decided to come up with low cost ways. One of the things that occurred to me was making use of these Hobby USB microscopes which have become quite popular.
These microscopes retail from as low as £30, even 20 and they are used typically for inspecting things like leaves and coins, they are not designed to see cellular objects of that scale.
The real break through was actually rather simple, it was just a case of inverting them so, it’s something that you would normally point downwards, we turned it upside down and made a stage. And essentially just inverting them and changing the light source and doing a few things which allowed us to see cells in considerable detail.

The other important breakthrough was the software we had written which was done coder who I contacted online and he was able to – to write a software that allowed us to capture three images from three microscopes at the same time unto a single laptop, when you are looking at tracking cells, you are interested in the speed of the cell going from point (A) to point (B), the computer it only recognizes things as differences in contrast, it doesn’t matter how pretty the picture is, which is usually what costs you more money. It gives me what I need for my research definitely, yeah.
