One Thing To Know Before Your Kids Jump In The Pool
AN EXPLAINER FROM THE ZAC FOUNDATION CHARITABLE FOUNDATION
The next time you’re at a pool will you do us a favor?
Take a look at the drain. You may see one that appears properly designed, well-maintained, and totally harmless.
Or, you might find a dangerous drain instead – the kind that led to the death of these three children and many others.
WHAT MAKES A DRAIN DANGEROUS?
Think about the end of a vacuum cleaner tube. We’ve all put our hand up to one and felt our palm get sucked against it.
If a human body part is pressed against the flat opening of a pool drain, the effect can be the same – except the suction can be equivalent to hundreds of pounds of force.
Over the past few decades, there are countless stories of children and adults who were playing near a drain or other pool outlet and ended up pinned against it.
VIRGINIA GRAEME BAKER October 28, 1994 – June 15, 2002
“I kept pulling at her, never understanding what it was that was holding her down. And I couldn’t get her off.” — NANCY BAKER, GRAEMES MOTHER
February 20, 2001 — July 28, 2007
“We thought that as long as we taught our children how to swim that they would be safe in the water. We had no idea about the danger lurking 1 in our own backyard pool.” — KAREN COHN, ZACHARY’S MOTHER
May 4, 2001 – March 20, 2008
“At the time of the accident, we had no way of knowing how seriously our little girl was hurt. It was only later that we discovered how dangerous the wading pool was and that it had caused her death.”
— KATEY TAYLOR, ABBEY’S MOTHER
WHAT DOES A DANGEROUS DRAIN LOOK LIKE?
Not that many years ago, most pools in America had flat drain cover like this one.
The problem with flat drain covers is that they can be completely blocked by a body part, causing the strong seal that leads to entrapment.
They also create a strong circulation of water that can attract hair and cause entanglement.
If you enter a pool supply store today, you’ll see that there are now safer drains on the market – ones designed so that they cant’ be fully blocked.
Federal law now requires all public pools – including those at hotels, schools, and apartment buildings – to use the new safer models.
But not all pools are in compliance. In March 2014, Brittany Manly (12) almost fell victim to an outdated drain in a hotel spa in Newton, Kansas.
“I leaned my head back to get my hair wet and I got caught and I blacked out… All I remember is waking up in the ambulance.”
– BRITTANY MANLY
Moreover, the law doesn’t extend to the 10 million residential pools in the U.S., meaning there are countless dangerous drains in backyard pools across the country.
HERE’S HOW YOU CAN PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY…
If you’re a parent:
Ask pool and spa owners if they are using anti-entrapment drain covers. If they are not or don’t know… find another pool.
If you or your child have long hair, tie it back before swimming.
Tell children to stay away from drains or other outlets. And keep telling them.
