One of the important aspects of American training which was criticized during and after the war was the way that infantrymen were trained with their basic weapons. That training environment had very little to do with what the soldier faced in actual combat. In combat, there was the noise and confusion of the battlefield, terrible weather conditions, all kinds of obstructions and the enemy made it their business not to be seen on the battlefield.
The American soldier had a tendency not to shoot at something he could not see. His trainers in The States told them this was a waste of ammunition. When soldiers got in battle, the veterans told them the exact opposite. Get your weapon out, we know the enemy is in a certain location and we as a squad, as a platoon or company; need to generate a volume of fire against this objective that will allow us to maneuver against it. So don’t worry about whether you can see the enemy or not. And they told their soldiers, we can always get more ammunition, we may not to be able to get more riflemen.
