-Hamid?
-Hello.
You should’ve seen it! We thought we were going to die! Two and a half hours on the water!

In Syria, we were at home asleep when a bomb hit the house. No one in the family was hurt but me. The blast took both of my legs. The right leg was completely gone. I kept the left one for a bit but it wouldn’t heal. They sent me to Jordan but still it didn’t get better. I was in a room for five days and no one came to check on me. The leg got infected and there were insects all over it.
I left my family in Jordan… I recently got married… I left them to get treatment abroad. I wanted to come by plane because the journey is hard for someone like me. I waited for refugee status for 3 years but didn’t hear back. Finally, I came by sea with smugglers.
In Turkey, my nephew helped me get around. He’d carry me or push me in a wheelbarrow. I’m happy they gave me a wheelchair here in Lesbos and now I just want to continue to Germany to get treatment.
