Close your eyes and visualize the breathtaking beauty of the seafloor here in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary
Is this what you imagined?
Although it is beautify, it is not always the case in our marine sanctuary. Here is the sad truth.
The Way We Are Treating Our Ocean Is Unacceptable
We Need to Make a Change
Why does this matter? Source: L Y B I O . N E T
Currently, 315 billion pounds of plastic pollute our oceans.
At our current rate, by 2050, there will be more plastics than fish.
Over time. golf balls fall apart in the ocean. The plastic covers break off and expose the core, which contains Zinc Acrylate.
The UN’s chemical classification system describes Zinc Acrylate as: “Very toxic to aquatic organisms, may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment.”
Fish, seabirds and marine mammals mistake plastics for food, resulting in ingestion, starvation, suffocation, entanglement and species extinction.
Many golf balls have a rubber band core that unravels into what looks, to marine life, like edible seagrass.
Our oceans have become a waste dump and it’s up to us to fix it!
Over the summer of 2016, we removed more than 4,000 golf balls from the ocean floor and beaches below Carmel Bay’s most famous golf course.
That’s 400 pounds or 72 square feet of seafloor completely covered in plastic, now removed.
Now we need your help. In the spring of 2017, we will be attending the Island School to study marine sciences and discover sustainable solutions to real-world problems.
Our generation is facing the most serious environmental crisis yet. Attending the Island School will give us the tools we need to become the change.
We always wondered why somebody didn’t do something about this…
And then we realized we are somebody
There are sill many balls left in our ocean…
Your donation will help support our education, so we can tackle more widespread environmental problems.
