Nelson Mandela, he was an inspirational person. He really wanted to heal the nation and improve the lives of everybody there.
He was phenomenal.
That’s why I’m really honored to have an opportunity to give the Nelson Mandela Lecture. I’m excited, I see great potential. I see a lot of great things going on in Africa.
Over the last decade the malaria deaths have been cut in half. The last wild case of polio in Africa was almost two years ago. And HIV—a lot of people are on treatment today.
Africa is incredibly young and is going to have huge population growth, doubling in population between now and 2050.
The great thing about youth is that they look at things in a new way. They can be brought into government and come up with new solutions. In the same way that I could see that microprocessors with a little bit of software would lead to a personal computing revolution. These young people in Africa can look at all the sectors, look at how agriculture is done, look at the services, look at health.
If we can enable them with good health, nutrition, and education then the optimistic possibilities for Africa will become the reality.
