Greetings, fellow Canadians.

As we celebrate today’s 145th anniversary of Confederation, we have much for which to be proud and thankful, a strong and growing economy, a caring and compassionate society, the enthusiasm of our London-bound Olympic athletes, and the bravery and devotion of our men and women in uniform.

On this last point, it is fitting that, with the passage of 200 years, we should reflect upon the military struggle that made Canada possible, the War of 1812, the United States is today our good neighbor and close friend.

But the border was once a place of fear and hostility.

Where almost exactly two centuries ago, an American invasion of Canada was launched.

Our ancestors… English, French, Aboriginal, people of all backgrounds, joined in the fight for Canada.

In so doing, they created a common sense of nationality based on diversity… and they laid the basis for the parliamentary federation of freedom, democracy and justice that is our inheritance.

So, for the best country in the world, this is a great day.

Do enjoy it! On behalf of Laureen, Ben and Rachel, and on behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish all Canadians a Happy Canada Day.
