But first news tonight a community is getting behind a high-school Track star.
The teens act of faith cost his team the win and has a lot of people talking about religious freedom.
Tiffany Craig is live in Columbus with this story. Tiff.
[Tiffany Craig]
To many people here it just doesn’t make sense that the team didn’t advance to State over a very small gesture that was made just past the finish line. It was a show of faith that has this town talking.
[Man]
If you wanna thank god, you can thank god.
[Tiffany Craig]
But that didn’t happen for Junior Derrick Hayes the anchor of the relay team who crossed the finish line first.
[K.C. Hayes - Father]
At the end of the race he put his hand by his ear and just pointed at the heavens.

And that cost the team a trip to State.
[K.C. Hayes - Father]
You’ve crossed the finish line and accomplished a goal and in seconds, you know its gone. And it’s – it’s tough, you know as a parent to see it.

But according to the rules that govern high school sports you can’t show any excessive active celebration, hands included, period.
[Tiffany Craig]
What if I tell you it was policy that they are not allowed to make any kind of hand gestures.
[Steve Williams - Weimar Resident]
Well than I think it’s not a good policy.
[Tiffany Craig]
Parents have complained to the State, but as it stand four athletes from Columbus High School now have no chance of advancing.
[K.C. Hayes - Father]
He’s talked to the other guys and nobody’s made they’re all, you know, they’re heartbroken, legitimately heartbroken because they had a chance to go in it.
[Tiffany Craig]
Ask around town and some see it as a violation of religious freedom.
[Laporchia Millier - Columbus Resident]
I don’t see what the big deal is, I mean, when people are thanking god, I mean, he’s the reason we live.
[Tiffany Craig]
Which is why for many in Columbus, the track team did win even without a title.

We wanted to hear Derrick’s version of the story but he didn’t want to tell us, worried about his chances on the team next year.
