Well, tomorrow President Obama will announce his plan for more gun control in our country.

But tonight, a local Sheriff is coming out against the President saying he will not enforce the new rules. The President is expected to urge Congress to pass a ban on military-style assault weapons and large ammo magazines. But Linn County Sheriff, Tim Mueller says, that’s unconstitutional and he is personally writing the White House about it. KOINLocal6 reporter, Kohr Harlan talked to the Sheriff tonight.

Kohr Harlan:
Linn County Sheriff, Tim Mueller says new gun regulations might make politicians feel good in the wake of the Newtown school shooting. But he says it will not make average Americans any safer.

Tim Mueller:
You can ban every firearm out there, and it’s not gonna fix it. People that are gonna commit these kind of heinous acts; they’re gonna find a way to do it.

The Sheriff says harsher sentences for gun violations and spending more money to treat people’s mental health problems would do much more than any new gun law.

Tim Mueller:
We cannot allow the actions of a very few, no matter how heinous that crime is to dictate regulations and laws that can potentially offend the constitutional rights of honest Americans. That’s not what we’re about.

Nick Russell:
He’s kind of saying what everybody thinks that that’s pro-gun; anybody that’s a sportsman or wants to defend themselves or anything else is just – it’s incredible to me.

At Albany Guns, Coins & Jewelry owner Nick Russell defends the use of semi-automatic weapons and high capacity ammunition clips. More convenient, he says for people who might shoot off a thousand rounds during target practice or shooting sage rats in Eastern Oregon, less time for the recreational gun user reloading.
