I’m so proud of these guys and they are doing the right thing by [inaudible] children in this country. We have to put politics and ideology to the side, we have to invest in our children. This is why I keep saying education is a civil rights issue about generation. Source: LYBIO.net The children of Newark, if they don’t have an education, they are not truly free, we can’t have great cities, we can’t have great communities without equality of education system. Newark, almost one in two children drop out of high-school, that is morally, economically unacceptable. If Newark can become the best urban school system in the country than it can happen anywhere. These guys, leadership encourage in putting politics aside , doing the right thing by children, is exactly what we have to do as a country.

Cory called and said: “Mark did not want to make this announcement public, that he wanted it to be anonymous.” And I said: “Is he crazy!”
[Everyone]
(laughs)
[Oprah Winfrey]
“Is he crazy! He need to make this Public, so more people will join in and get money.” But your such a shy person and they have been talking about this for months and months and months and months and you wanted to remain anonymous and we talked you into coming on here. So thank you for doing it.
[Mark Zuckerberg]

Move fast, take risks, its okay to try big things, you’re better off trying something and having it not work and learning from that, than having not done anything at all. So, that philosophy is very deeply ingrained here.
[Oprah Winfrey - Voice Over]
Marks, road to Facebook started with a great education from public school, to boarding school to Harvard
[Mark Zuckerberg]
I started Facebook when I was in College at a great University and no doubt if I haven’t had that opportunity than I wouldn’t be sitting here today.
[Audience]
(claps)
[Oprah Winfrey]
Well, thank you for letting us inside your home.
[Oprah Winfrey]
Some people, undoubtedly will be criticizing the timing of Marks announcement cause we know there is an unauthorized movie that’s coming out about Mark and Facebook. So, what did you wanna say about that
[Mark Zuckerberg]
Oh, well, I mean, its a movie, its fun, you know I mean, its um, you know, a lot of it is fiction, but even the film makers will say that. You know, they are trying to build a good story. Source: LYBIO.net You know, I’m not gonna promise you – I – this is my life, so, I know its not that dramatic.
[Everyone]
(laughs)
[Mark Zuckerberg]
The last six years have been a lot of coding and focus and hard work, but, maybe it would be fun to remember all this partying and all this crazy drama, so, who knows. Maybe it will be an interesting story.
[Oprah Winfrey]
Ya. So but I would just like to say, that I know, you all have been planning this for a long time, originally we thought about making this announcement, ah, around September 10th and I said: “I’m not on the air.” Source: LYBIO.net So the fact that your doing it now, and wanted to remain anonymous, I really do appreciate you coming on and showing your face and stepping up with the 100 million dollar
[Mark Zuckerberg]
Well, what’s, its what’s best for Newark.
[Audience]
(claps)
[Oprah Winfrey]
Its what’s best for the kids
[Oprah Winfrey]
We’ll be right back, we’ll be right back
[Oprah Winfrey]
Okay, so the big question? How are you, first of all, its one hundred million dollars for Newark Public Schools that Mark Zuckerberg has just granted, but you need other people, its part of a
[Mayor Cory Booker - Newark, New Jersey]
Right.
[Oprah Winfrey]
Its part of a pledge for other people.
[Mayor Cory Booker - Newark, New Jersey]
We already got a match from other people by Ray Chambers . A phenomenal guy Bill Ackman who just stepped up with a matching grant, but what Marcus said and what I say: “To change the

Will you let us know, so we can continue on this show… give shout out to people who are giving
[Mayor Cory Booker - Newark, New Jersey]
I definitely will Pershing Square Foundation, I wanna give out Pershing Square Foundation and others, right now, but, but, look the real challenge is to the residents of the city of Newark. What the Governor and I have said is that: “We have to turn to Newarkers and trust them to step up.” Source: LYBIO.net So fundamental to this is the level of accountability, where nobody gets a pass. We need to take leadership from parents from teachers, somebody said correctly, from students themselves.
[Oprah Winfrey]
From students themselves. Ya.
[Mayor Cory Booker - Newark, New Jersey]
Newarkers have to formulate this plan and how we are going to use this money. Source: LYBIO.net We know there is three critical elements; one is we must support teachers, we can’t bash them, we must elevate them, and we gotta support teachers.
[Audience]
(claps and applauds)
[Oprah Winfrey]
Ya.
[Mayor Cory Booker - Newark, New Jersey]
2. We have to design systems of accountability
[Oprah Winfrey]
Yes
[Mayor Cory Booker - Newark, New Jersey]
To hold everyone accountable, nobody gets a pass. Parents, teachers, there must be consequences if we fail to serve our children. And number 3. is we must support schools of excellence. Now, this charter school versus district school debate is really bunk, cause there’s bad Charter schools and there is bad District schools. And what the Governor has said very clearly, and I agree is, we are going to support Excellence and if you don’t provide that Excellence and you don’t provide, forget a school, a cathedral of learning. Ah, and we will hold you to account. And that’s what we are looking to do!
[Oprah Winfrey]
So, I just can’t emphasis that a 100 million dollars is so generous but its really just the beginning.
[Chris Christie Governor - New Jersey]
It has to be, and in the end, what we need to do, Cory and I need to do New Jersey is to get away from the things that have divided us on this education issue in the past, and what we need to focus on, is, what’s really going on in a place like Newark, is, we have violence and we have drug-use because we have no hope. And the reason we don’t have hope is because children don’t believe tomorrow can’t be better than today. Source: LYBIO.net Because its an obscenity that we’ve robbed from them their education. And that’s what we need to do, and we have to provide that leadership and the accountability with be something that he and I will make sure, that we have in the city of Newark, that we don’t have it now, that we make sure that enforce it, the way it needs to be enforced.
[Oprah Winfrey]
You said earlier, that both of you are going to choose a Superintendent, have you all talked to Michelle Rhee?
[Audience]
(claps and applauds)
[Mayor Cory Booker - Newark, New Jersey]
(laughs)
[Oprah Winfrey]
Hello!
[Mayor Cory Booker - Newark, New Jersey]
You said it, you said it yourself and I’ll admit, she is a warrior woman, she is a wonder women but it can not be focused on the individual – it must be focused, it must be focused on the extraordinary leadership that exists in Newark, the children, the parents, they must, we need warrior people, we need wonder people, super men and super women and I know, that exists in Newark, live there and see it everyday. And we need our hero’s to step up cause at the end of the day, King said it, we have to repent, not for the violent actions of the bad people but the silence.
