This video is inspired by Ben Breedlove & dedicated to Jen Linn & everyone else who lived fearlessly but is no longer with us. Hello, I’m Michael Lazerow. All my life, I’ve had a heart condition. VSD. Short for ventricular septal defect. The first time I cheated death was when I was 18 months. I was in heart failure. The next time I was 19. My heart valve stopped working. My blood pressure fell to zero. I had 3 hours to live. An emergency valve replacement saved my life. I don’t remember much from my surgery. Expect one thing that I will never forget. Rabbi Joe Weinberg (RIP) stood over my bed. He had gray hair. A thin, sunken-in face. Just like god – in a tux. He said I looked like crap. I wasn’t offended. I thought I was already dead. I should’ve died. But I didn’t. I should’ve been full of fear. But I wasn’t. I felt a warm peace, a deep calm. That feeling changed my life forever. Seeing my death helped me live fearlessly. For the first time, I had no fear. It’s not a coincidence that I started my first company at Northwestern later that year. 13 years later, I started my fourth, Buddy Media. And 2 hours ago, I signed a deal to sell it.

I can’t stop thinking of how lucky I am to be alive. Lucky to have a healthy heart. (And lucky to have followed it.) Lucky to have witnessed the rise of Facebook and Twitter. Lucky to work with the most talented people on the planet. Lucky to have 3 healthy kids. And lucky to be with Kass. She makes me better. Everyday. And I ask: Why did I live, while Ben and Jen did not? This summer, the deal will close. I look forward to working with the new company. Its leader is a bad ass. He popularized cloud computing. And gave $100 million to build a hospital to help children. Forbes says his company is the #1 innovative company in the world. (Lucky for him, Buddy Media wasn’t considered.) Fortune says it’s the 27th best place to work. $2 billion in sales last year. $3 billion this year. After my last surgery, I read a quote from Gandhi I will never forget. “The enemy is fear. We thing it is hate; but, it is fear.” If you live without fear, anything is possible. Is fear holding you back?
