Sometimes winter extends its reach into the shallow waters under the ice. When sea water freezes into sea ice it releases its salt creating super salty brine. This percolates through cracks and the ice into the sea water below. The brine then sinks because it’s much denser than the surrounding water. It’s also much colder so the sea water freezes on contact forming what is called a brinicle. Over the course of about 12 hours the super salty ice stalactite grows, trapping anything it touches in ice. Most creatures here, like, starfish move far to slowly to escape these fingers of death.
