Did you know that roughly 1 out of 6 people between the ages of 14 to 49 years has genital herpes? Knowing the facts about herpes can you help make informed decisions about your health.

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease or STD. People get genital herpes by having vaginal, anal, or oral sexual contact with someone who has the disease. You cannot get genital herpes from sharing a drink or from a toilet seat. The symptoms of this STD can be very mild to painful. In some cases, a person can be infected with genital herpes and not even have symptoms because of this, most people are not aware of their infection. In other cases, a person may have 1 or more blisters on or around the genitals, rectum or mouth. The blisters break and leave sores that can take weeks to heal.
There is no treatment that can cure herpes.

However, antiviral medications can prevent or shorten outbreaks. People with herpes should not have sex during an outbreak. Condoms can provide some protection against genital herpes.
