[Ken Bastida:]
Tonight a veteran dog who helped US Forces in Iraq has a new owner.

[Elizabeth Cook:]
A Bay area soldier who worked with the dog was at S.F.O today to take him home. KPIX 5’s John Ramos shows us the heartwarming reunion.

[John Ramos:]
About a month ago, former Army Specialist Ken Wyrsch was in Iraq fighting along side a Kurdish military outfit when word came that the camp was shutting down and the unit disbanding. He realized one of his best buddies was going to be left behind.

[Ken Wyrsch (Former Soldier in Iraq):]
You don’t leave a friend behind, can’t do it.

[John Ramos:]
This was his friend. A dog named Ollie that had been raised as a puppy and became the camp’s beloved mascot.

[Ken Wyrsch (Former Soldier in Iraq):]
He was like a morale booster, he was there when we left on our missions, he was there when we got back.

[John Ramos:]
But Wyrsch says Ollie was a lover, not a fighter, and never would have survived the harsh – even cruel-treatment that animals face in that country.

[Ken Wyrsch (Former Soldier in Iraq):]
I don’t know, some Iraqi would use it for target practice or something. And that’s just my guess.

[John Ramos:]
So Wyrsch contacted SPCA, International and they took the handoff, sending Ollie on a trip half way across the world. And that’s why Wyrsch was at the cargo depot at SFO today, to reunite with his old friend.

[Ken Wyrsch (Former Soldier in Iraq):]
How you doing, good to see you.

[John Ramos:]
And if it’s possible for a dog to say “thank you”, this was it. It’s hard to tell who was happier-or more excited about Ollie’s improbable twist of fate.

[Ken Wyrsch (Former Soldier in Iraq):]
And this right here was thousands and thousands of dollars of donations that went into this dog, you know? He’s a good boy, he’s worth it.

Today, Ollie begins a new life in a very different place all because a good friend answered his call to duty. In San Francisco, John Ramos, KPIX-5.
