Seal Hunt 2010 – Protecting The Harp Seal Nursery
[Rebecca Aldworth – Humane Society Of United States]
My name is Rebecca Aldworth, I’m here with the Humane Society International and The Humane Society Of The United States. And we are flying North-East of Newfoundland over one of the most spectacular landscapes I’ve ever seen. This is the Harp Seal Nursery. I come here every year and observe these amazing creatures on these beautiful ice-floats. To me it’s the best place on this planet. We are up here[Newfoundland] documenting the most horrific slaughter of marine mammals on the planet. I remember 12 years ago, when I saw the first Seal, being clubbed to death, in front of me, and I made a very serious promise to them[Seals]. I vowed on that day, that I would spend the rest of my life, if necessary, working to shut this slaughter down. That I would be here every single year this slaughter went on, until I could bring it[slaughtering] to an end. In sharp contrast to the horrible scenes in-front of us, is the spectacular beauty of the Harp Seal Nursery before these Sealers[men who slaughter] arrive. What we are here to do, is to restore peace to the ice-flows[floats?]. We know about the Seal Hunt we don’t know about the Seal Nursery. And that’s an absolute tragedy. This is a treasure we should be working to preserve. It is one of the greatest wildlife migrations on this planet. This is a fight we are going to win and the Harp Seal Nursery will be once again, a Nursery.
