Canada’s Minister of Public Safety, Vic Toews, got some startling news recently. Vic found out that prisoners in our federal system – prisoners – occasionally get permission from the Wardens to pool their money and buy pizza out of their work accounts. Now this is a big expense for prisoners, because they make about $54 every two weeks. But then, they take the pizza and resell it to the inmates who have already paid for it and they make money on the whole deal. And then, it gets worse. And this is the part that Vic really hates. They take that money and they give it to charity: Boys and Girls Clubs, CNIB, UNICEF, something called the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada which let’s face it, sounds very suspicious.
Well, when Vic heard this he hit the roof. He wrote the head of Corrections Canada, said this was ridiculous; this was “coddling” prisoners; the whole thing must come to an end. And I do not blame him because it is a slippery slope my friends. If there are prisoners out there raising money for school lunch programs that is coming dangerously close to contributing to society? God knows where that type of behavior might end. Next thing, you know, they might start obeying laws. And you know where that leads – paying taxes.

I feel bad for Vic, I really do. There are a lot of problems in prison and he’s got to deal with them. There’s drugs, violence, gangs and now this – evidence that the desire to do good can exist in the most horrible of places. Well, not any more my friends. Not in this country. It’s time to nip that in the bud. Charity starts at home, but it stops with Vic.
