The battles include some brutal realities for Richard Peterson.

Normally nobody, including the Germans would be shooting anybody in a parachute. That just one done, I mean, there was no – there was no challenge for shooting a guy in a parachute for God’s sake. He is uh – I mean he’s had it, you can’t miss. And here I came across this 109 and the sky was full of bomber shoots [ ] had gotten ‘em [in his] target area. And this son of a bitch was going from parachute to parachute shooting up guys in parachutes.

Oh my God, just I mean – this was too much as far as I was concerned. And I did want them – I did want to blow ‘em them up I wanted him to bail.

So I was picking at him. Just hitting ‘em. Just – and I get strikes on him and he knew I was there, and he knew I was getting strikes and he finally pulled the cannon. And I said, you better maker buster.

And I – I – then I emptied my guns on this guy. He was mincemeat by the time I got through with them and it was an issued. And of course other guys who weren’t there were nervous about me shooting the guy in the shoot.

They had to be there to know what I was seeing, where this guy going to – those guys were helpless, of a bomber crews going down. And I just uh – I just tore him up, with 800 rounds a minute you can do a lot of damage with 50 caliber shells from six guns. So that was the end of that.
