Here wait, stop for a minute, do you want to know what Purple Mattress is suing me over four simple safety questions. I’m going to tell you right now.
But first it was that viral video featuring Goldilocks asking the very simple question, what’s a super easy way to tell if your bed is awful?
That’s the single question that captivated me about the Purple Mattress. They shifted my mindset into a magical purple land and I actually really bought into the egg test.
So much so for the past six months my review platform Honest Mattress Reviews promoted their successes, their record-breaking Kickstarter campaign and the Purple Mattress.
But as more consumers started publishing videos and pictures of both the mattress and the new pillow coated in a white powder, I inquired via social channels, what is this powder?
As I have great communication with most of the mattress companies in the global market, I expected a relatively quick reply; but nothing came when I asked about what is the purple powder – see here.
So I did what any logical consumer or journalists would do and I called them.
They initially told me on this phone call that it was talcum powder. But after placing me about a two minute hold, they confirmed it’s not talcum powder but yet very non-toxic plastic powder.
I became very concerned with my health as well as the health of others at the potential of inhalation of plastic powder, it just didn’t sound safe.
So I created four blog articles and asked four simple questions, what is the powder, is it safe, is it safe to touch and is it safe to inhale?
Rather than communicating with me on any level whether it be social, a phone call an email their response came in the form of a massive lawsuit.
Before I even had an opportunity to hire an attorney and have them explain what all of these things mean; in which I got all of these in a matter of just a couple days.
They had already pressed and received a Federal temporary restraining order banning my articles, banning my review of the mattress.
They even went so far they had the rating of their mattress federally banned from the internet.
In the meantime, because I didn’t know what all of these things meant.
I replaced their rating with this. [Poop Image]
But to be clear, who can go through this much documentation having no experience with the legal system in a day; in response to this Purple Mattress sought a contempt of court, contempt of court; as an independent American journalist, I have the right to my opinion.
You can love this mattress, you can hate this mattress, you can turn this mattress into a boat personally I don’t care.
But as a consumer you have a right to know if there is a particle in this mattress small enough for you to inhale.
I asked four questions and they sued me.
I was able to hire Marc Randazza, First Amendment attorney.
He reviewed my case and realized that my rights had been completely steamrolled.
He had a sample of the Purple Mattress sent to leading Harvard doctor and scientist to test what is the powder and is it safe, in his preliminary findings he said this.

As inhalable microspheres, these have the potential to cause respiratory irritation especially when inhaled in large numbers as shown in my laboratory.
Which was my concern in the first place; since these findings came out. Purple has not acknowledged to consumers on the product page, on the pillows product page; that their product is coated in a plastic powder that is small enough to be inhaled.
Rather they published a single blog post saying that it’s 100% safe, food-contact grade material.
Let’s take a look at this mattress and the powder. So you can decide for yourself.
Okay, so let’s take a look at how the mattress is constructed so you can really understand.
There’s a nice cover but it is breathable.
As we take off this cover, you can see that it’s stretchy and definitely breathable.
I can actually see through these holes, right here, the color of my skin.
As you remove this cover, you have what’s called a fire sock, this is designed that in the event this mattress catches on fire that it won’t hit certain temperatures allowing someone to get out of bed.
As you can see, you can see right through the sock; this is not designed to contain a powder.
It is designed to simply keep temperatures from overheating in the event of a fire.
Now the fire sock is not designed to be cut but for the purpose of this demonstration
I cut it so you can actually see the full powder.
Now again this, I can see right through to my hand.
This I can see right through to the grid.
So if I was to pull this back; I want to really take you inside and show you what my concern is.

As you look in each and every single grid, there is powder, it’s coated, it’s coated all over this mattress. This is where you sleep.
If I slept on my stomach, this is what I would be inhaling okay, but I want to give you a demonstration to really show you.
If I take a plain black t-shirt, right and I place this on the mattress, like I’m going to sleep, and I lay on it, you know push it down a couple times, just to simulate lying on the mattress. If you slept on it and this much powder was on it, would you be concerned.
