[Nestle USA Conserving Millions Of Gallons Of Water]
The drought in California has brought the importance of conserving water into sharp focus – and everyone is searching for ways to stretch the limited water supply.
Nestlé understands the importance of water conservation and is doing its part. At Nestlé USA’s ice cream factories in Bakersfield and Tulare, steps are being taken to conserve 26 million gallons of water annually – including planning for a new wastewater treatment plant at Bakersfield.
At some Nestlé Waters North America facilities in California, changes will be made to landscaping – and some facilities will implement a cooling tower water reuse system in their bottling operations. These changes are projected to save about 55 million gallons annually beginning in 2016.
Nestlé USA is also in the process of using an approach first developed at one of Nestlé’s dairy factories in Mexico – and applying it at its evaporated milk factory in Modesto. It’s called “Zero Water” – and will help save nearly 63 million gallons of water per year by reducing the factory’s reliance on water.
Milk contains approximately 88% water. By heating fresh cow’s milk at low pressure, half of that water content will be removed and collected.
The resulting water vapor will then be condensed, treated, and purified. The food quality water will then be stored and used in boilers, pumps, and other places that normally use water.
The combined result of Nestlé’s efforts in California is substantial. 144 million gallons of water is projected to be saved each year. The need for water conservation in California has never been this critical. Nestlé is committed
to being part of the solution.
