All systems go at white sands missile range in southern new Mexico today. NASA blasted an unmanned rocket about a mile into the air. Joe Bartels was there — and explains why this launch was so important for the future of NASA.

At exactly 7 this morning– NASA blasted its unmanned Orion capsule into the new Mexico sky. officials were testing the abort procedure in the event of an emergency.

[Scott Altman - Astronaut]
“I was taking a lot of deep breaths trying to calm myself down. i actually started writing down some data in the procedure to calm myself down.

[Commentator]
NASA officials say the abort procedure worked just as expected — removing the crew compartment up and away from the mock disaster. With the space shuttle fleet expected to retire in the next two years — NASA is working to develop a newer and safer way to get humans to space.

“NASA has set a path. we want to do space exploration again, to go beyond low earth orbit. that means maybe the moon and definitely we want to go to mars.

Astronaut Scott Altman has been on 4 space shuttle flights and was on hand to watch this morning’s test.

“As a person riding on the rocket, it’s a great feeling to know that the system that’s there to get you away from a problem… works.”
