Welcome to the League of Legends Patch Preview. Iâ€™m Phreak and Iâ€™m here with Morello, Lead Champion Designer. Together weâ€™ll be discussing some of the gameplay changes coming into the next update for League of Legends. Note that this video does not cover every single change, but will explain the thought process behind some of our decisions. Weâ€™re making two small changes to Twisted Fate: Weâ€™re increasing his base attack range and making the player manually acquire targets once he locks a card. What are we hoping to do with these changes?

One of the things wee really wanted to improve Twisted Fateâ€™s laning consistency and ability to trade with other people in lane, which is poor right now. Not only can Twisted Fate now trade more effectively with other auto-attackers since he has a similar range, Pick a Card now has similar range to spells as well. This lets him trade with characters like Annie or not come out in unfavorable or completely unsafe positions when laning against a multitude of characters. The manual acquisition of Pick a Card is a quality of life change. A lot of Twisted Fate players express frustration with Gold Card coming up and then firing against a target you didnâ€™t intend to hit. This will make it so he has control over the targets he picks and he has to choose the most effective target, as opposed to accidentally firing it at the wrong target due to fate or weird circumstances.
Weâ€™re nerfing the healing per stack on Tryndamereâ€™s Bloodlust. Why are we nerfing Tryndamere?
Itâ€™s almost impossible to push Tryndamere out of lane when heâ€™s doing well. This is because the heal for how much Fury he has is very high. This means when Tryndamere is in there dominating his lane, getting tons of hits on the enemy, crushing lots of minions, his Fury is always full and heâ€™s healing for a ton. This doesnâ€™t leave a lot of counter-play options to the enemy laner. Conversely, we havenâ€™t touched the base level heal, which means that if Tryndamere does have a bad lane, he can go ahead and still survive in that lane and try to make a comeback and do some counter-play on his own
Weâ€™re replacing the Perseverance mastery in the Utility Tree with Strength of Spirit, which converts maximum mana into bonus health regeneration. Why are we making this change?

Since Perseverance works on total percentage of health regeneration it really wasnâ€™t usable in most cases except for very abusive ones. Furthermore, Strength of Spirit was really fun old mastery. We thought it added a lot of cool item choices and a lot of different ways you could build your character based on having this mastery, so we wanted to put it back in the game and re-introduce those options. The Utility tree has been under-appreciated in the new masteries as well, so we wanted to use this as an option to put some good buffs deep in that tree.
Weâ€™re introducing a lot of new runes in the new patch to replace the dodge runes that weâ€™re removing and refunding in the near future. These new runes have stats like hybrid armor and magic penetration, gold over time seals, bonus percentage health, life steal, and spell vamp. What are the goals with these new runes?
Simply put, the first reason is â€œnew runes are cool and make more options for players.â€ Players like to experiment with crazy builds, find their own niche of the way like the build champions, and new runes just allow you to do that better. Percent health are a natural fit on champions who have health that they get from abilities or other statistics that scale on health. For example, Choâ€™Gath with his Feast is really good with this, Vladimir with his passive is very good, as well as Volibear who has a health scaling ability. We think this will give some new build options for those champions. Hybrid penetration runes are something that fans have been asking about for a while and also helps on characters like Akali, Jax, Kayle, or other champions who scale on both magical and physical damage. For these hybrid characters, these new runes will give you more total penetration than alternating magic and armor penetration runes would on their own. I want to talk for a second about the new life steal and spell vamp quintessences. Even though weâ€™ve been reducing some of the sustain in our game through our support changes and other and other such adjustments, life steal and spell vamp are in a different category. They require some risk or opportunity cost in order to get the sustain back, so for example to use life steal, you have to start auto-attacking more than you normally would, or you have to engage with other champions. This makes for some interesting decisions on those champions instead of just passively getting health back.
