Just a brief on this spoken word, seems that every-time that I ask questions to do with my culture I always get the same response: “It is what it is.” And when I continue to ask, “Why though?” “Why do we do it this way?” “Why can’t we do it like that?” I always get three classic responses; You are ignorant. You are disrespectful. And you are westernized. Uh, no, no and uh no. Okay. Those questions come from a place with me wanting to immerse myself in my culture, me wanting to understand who I am. Because I claim to be a proud African. And so if I don’t really understand this culture that I claim to be proud of then I’m just: Stupid. Ok. So, these questions do not come from a place of being rude or just being arrogant. NO WAY. HERE IT GOES:
I love him, and he loves me too so I could not possibly leave him for that would break his heart. Just like how he broke the particles of my flesh, broke my bones as blood gushed out of my body- The fine work of his fist. Broke me emotionally my self esteem, my confidence, my pride, my dignity, tore my apart psychologically and crushed into tiny itsy bisty worthless pieces- The fine work of his words.
He managed to mold me into this weak, fragile, brainless or should i say mindless fine art of his. But if i am being real here when he found me i was already a weak, fragile, brainless or should i say mindless piece of art in this gallery called the world. For the moment i popped out into this world and the looked down under to see my gender, society or should i say culture has done nothing but mold me into this weak, fragile, brainless, pathetic excuse of a human being called the ideal African woman.
The kind that bows down to the male gender like it’s some form of God. The kind that will always take the back seat while the superior male gender drives. The kind that is not allowed to make a family decision because only man are worthy. The kind that is not raised to become a leader because of the formation of her genitalia. And the kind that will one day be sold by her own family in the name of tradition, That kind!! That’s the kind i was raised to be but i must have missed something along the way because i have turned out to be the kind that will question tradition when necessary. The kind that will not wait for a man but will stand up tall and scream out loud until her voice is heard. The kind that refuses to be limited buy her anatomical features. And mostly a proud enough African to point out the gaps and inequalities that still exist in out culture. And That Kind!!! That is the ideal African Woman.
So when i tell a woman who is being abused by her husband but cannot do anything about it because our culture frowns upon divorce, when i tell her to run out of there- Do not tell me i am too Westernized.
When i question why my brothers are treated as tho they are somewhat more important than I- Do not tell me i am too Westernized
When i protest against female circumcision- Do not tell me i am too Westernized
When i tell African women to get more involved in politics- Do not tell me i am too Westernized
When i question why my values as an African woman is determined by the number of cows and goats that my family think i am worth. When i question that- Do not tell me i am too Westernized.
I am not Westernized, I refuse to be Westernized, I am simply a proud enough African to point out the gaps and inequalities that still exist in our culture. I am not Westernized, I refuse to be Westernized, I am simply a proud enough African to point our the gaps and inequalities that still exist in our culture. And that is the ideal African woman.
