Judy’s Husband

I prayed for God – to heal her, but to guide the hands of a surgeon, give him the wisdom to know what to do and steady hand to do it.

Judy Price
Shooting Victim

[Judy Price:]
I am Judy Price and I was just turned 53 at the accident. Before my accident, I was in very good health.

[Paul Price:]
She could lift 50 pound bags of bird seed with, you know, no effort.

[Judy Price:] Source: LYBIO.net
I am a very active person. I love nature and I like being outside. I ride and drive motorcycles. My husband and I are active square dancers. Bicycling, we’d like to go bicycling in the neighborhood.

[Paul Price:]
When we lived in Virginia, we used to like to go canoeing.

[Judy Price:]
I give it all. If I go skiing, I give it all. I go snowmobiling, whatever it is, the yard, the lawnmower, the weedwacker, the leaf blower, I am the woman you want to call.

[Paul Price:]
She is very energetic, very upbeat, always positive.

[Judy Price:]
And I am a person that gives a 120%. People out even at work, I give 120%.

[Paul Price:]
I think that’s what makes her so liked…

[Judy Price:]
I am administrative officer at the air force safety center and I take care of one one-star general and one two-star general. I also take care of other 150 people employees at the safety center. I am also the protocol officer, which means I am going down to the auditorium with flags, carrying flags, making sure the auditorium is properly – proper for a ceremony coming up.

[Paul Price:]
She seems to have a requirement to help and to do the things for you if you’ll let her.

[Judy Price:]
I’m a strong independent woman. I enjoy shooting, just casual hobby shooting, and I also enjoy shooting for a protection issue too. I’ve had a lot of training. I’ve had a Concealed Carry Permit for several years. I’m not a novice. I got my permit in 2004. It’s a two day class then you’re required by law to have a refresher course in 2006, 2008 and 2010 then I have had fresher courses. I’ve had the Taurus gun probably since 2005. And the first thing you do when you get home is – you get it out, you’re going to get it ready, and you’re going to read the literature about all different things. And we both came across the literature that said that this gun was a very safe gun.

[Paul Price:]
I am very familiar and knowledgeable about safety aspects with firearms. I used to be a police officer, so I’ve had training with handguns. When they started to have the concealed carry license in Virginia, we were living there at the time. So we were some of the first to apply, both of us. I never had any concerns anytime we ever have been shooting.

[Judy Price:]
There are certain clothes that you can wear. There are certain clothes you can’t wear. If you’re going to carry, they call printing, if you can see the gun sticking out your clothes and things like that. Now, I have several different kinds of holsters depending on my outfit. Clothes that I would wear that have an elastic waist cannot have in the pants holster because you know – there is nothing to hold the holster on you then. So in those cases, I have something called a smart carry and it’s a cloth pouch that’s held together in the back with Velcro and you just snap it around you that and you put the gun on one side and there’s room with a – for another magazine and your concealed carry permit on the other side.

Now, I do have another holster that I would wear with jeans that actually is in the pants and it’s made of like out of hard plastic and it’s kind of molded to the shape of your gun. We’ve go to Calvary Chapel in Albuquerque, New Mexico. And part of our ministry, there are several different types of ministries. It’s called the safety ministry. If something would happen at church, you know – an active shooter or a situation would arrive; Paul and I would stand up and help the situation if we could.

[Vince Harrison (Retired Police Officer):]
Okay your stance, you feel good?

[Judy Price:] Source: LYBIO.net
Hmm…

[Vince Harrison:]
All right, two rounds, center mass, 10 seconds. Front sight, front sight, fire. Nice and slow. Beautiful. Beautiful. Scan, reholstered. Good.

I’m a retired police officer and I oversee a ministry at a large church here in Albuquerque and I’m the ministry coordinator.

We allow a certain people that have shown that they have the proper skills and are able to manipulate a weapon and engage targets and know the liability of carrying a concealed carry weapon, which Judy and Paul both do. We’ll be out of the range of them several times as a group training; they are both very familiar, very competent with their fire arms.

Judy and Paul come out actually shooting more than I do.

Good job, Judy.

Her shoot pattern is very close, which means that she’s very familiar with her weapon and that’s the whole point. She can move and shoot. She can manipulate a weapon. She can engage the target. Her gun safety skills are there.

[Judy Price:]
The accident occurred on 24 November, 2009, two days before Thanksgiving.

Come on. Come on, Sam. Let’s go. Come on, we’re going to go for a walk.

Since I’m wearing sweatpants, you cannot carry a regular holster. So I have to use the smart carry. Off Cody and I went around the neighborhood. So we get home. As we passed the office door, I said to Paul, we’re home.

[Paul Price:]
Well, I was sitting here at the computer, doing some work.

[Judy Price:]
I decided to stop at the closet, and take off my clothes – take off my top. And as I did, the Velcro on the holster, the smart carry holster, got entrapped into my nice fuzzy sweatpants top. And when I pulled it, it broke loose the connection that the holster had around my waist and the gun and the holster fell as a unit, right down to the bottom of my shoes. When it hit the ground, I saw a red and yellow flame. And then I heard bang…

[Paul Price:]
Bow, and then I’m like oh my gosh what happened there?

[Judy Price:] Source: LYBIO.net
And the next thing I know, I felt like a strange feeling. I put my hand there and I went oh, oh no. And then, right then, I knew my life is totally different. This is not worrying about who’s going for Thanksgiving dinner. I mean this is – this is life and death now.

[Paul Price:]
I heard Judy holler, call 911.

[Judy Price:]
I knew that you just can’t stand around and wait. So with that I laid down on my side…

[Paul Price:]
And I said we’ve had an accidental discharge and my wife has been shot.

[Judy Price:]
I was really kind of worried that my intestines were becoming out…

[Paul Price:]
About that time she said to me…

[Judy Price:]
I do love you, do you love me?

[Paul Price:]
She said, I love you, Paul, but I’m going to die.

[Judy Price:]
You well know and I love you too, but you’re not going to die tonight. And I said, yes, I am.

[Paul Price:]
I heard the door bell rings. I turned out. It was police and searched me to make sure I didn’t have any gun or anything…

[Judy Price:]
Once he was cleared of that and pretty soon the emergency people came…

[Paul Price:]
It’s devastating, devastating.

[Judy Price:]
There’s not words for me to describe about what was going through my head when I was sitting here on the end of the bed, I could – there’s nothing I could do for she. She wouldn’t let me touch here.

[Paul Price:] Source: L Y B I O . N E T
There was so much pressure in my chest that I mean taking a breath was difficult. I was worried on saving my energy because I knew things weren’t going to be so good. I remember in the ambulance them asking me did I normally have problems with them finding the veins. No, I’m a very healthy person. So I have got great veins, but apparently from all the blood loss inside my veins had collapsed…
