Jonathan was my first born. He was born with EB, so epidermolysis bullosa. It’s a skin disease making his skin very, very fragile. So we need to do daily dressings on him, because there is no cure. His skin basically blisters and shears off, similar to third-degree burns.

Day to day is a struggle just from walking it’s difficult. And we do have three to three-and-a-half hours of dressings every second evening to do. The obstacles are in front of him and he just keeps waking up every morning with a smile on his face. And then I tell myself I – how can I not wake up with a smile.

Jonathan is probably one of the smartest kids I know. He’s got the most beautiful soul. He’s just that lovable kid that you come across once in a lifetime that you just can’t – you just want to hug. And you just want to have – you want to be in his presence.

Jonathan thinks that we are a documentary film crew filming about dreams and aspirations.

Jonathan Pitre:
When I young I wanted to play sports. I just loved the game. You know it was just part of me. At that time I didn’t really realize what EB would become you know that I would have limitations. As I grew older things started to change. So I still have the same dreams, but instead of wanting to play them I want to use my voice to help people with EB. So I decided to myself I’m going to make this my goal. I wanted to use my voice to try and raise awareness so that may be one day we can get a cure.

What Jonathan doesn’t know… is that we are a film crew from WE Day and we’ve come with a surprise.

Jonathan I have something to tell you.

We are here to focus on you. We are actually from the WE Day production team. And we heard your story. And we are incredibly inspired by you and everything you’re doing. And we are here to invite you to speak on stage as a WE Day speaker for National WE Day April 1st.

Wow! Wow!

There will be 16,000 kids.

No problem.

He’s going to do something big. And it is clear. And he’s going to change the world with his voice and just – just knowing him is a motivation for anybody.

How is this going WE Day?!!! I’m very proud to be here with you today.

You just heard how I was born with a skin disease called epidermolysis bullosa. What you didn’t here was that under all of my dressings are blisters, and wounds that look like third degree burns. I’m in constant pain. And most of the time I want to get to my wheelchair. But that’s the last negative thing you are going to hear from me.

Instead I want to share my dreams with you.

Thank you. Dreams are the first ingredient to success. They push us to do more, be more and achieve more. Every morning I wake up thinking about my dreams. And I feel like I can do anything.

[APPLAUSE]

When I was younger I trained to playing sports. I was going to be the next Sidney Crosby or LeBron James. Sports are in my DNA, but it wasn’t meant to be. As my disease got worse I realized how my body couldn’t take impacts, falling or even the wear and tear of equipment.

I remember watching from the stands as my sister played hockey, the sport I love most. At first I was stand side and depressed. My dream was out on the ice, but sitting in those stands taught me something. It taught me that the only true limits we experience in life are the ones we create for ourselves, or the ones that life – or the ones that life forces upon us.

I needed to dream bigger to expand my horizons. That’s my approach in life. I face many roadblocks and I’m sure to face many more. But each time I do – it reminds me that nothing is accomplished in life without courage and determination.

[APPLAUSE]

Jonathan Pitre:
Great things and greatness do not come easily, but they do come when you try with your full heart, when you’re willing and open to embrace life, when you take things one day at a time and use what you’ve got.

[APPLAUSE]

Jonathan Pitre:
I may not have a physical ability to become a professional athlete, but I’ve got a voice and it is powerful.

This is my voice. I can become anything I want, a sportscaster, a cook, my options are limitless and I’m in no rush to figure it all out. I have my fair share of mountains to climb. But I’m still here, still chasing my dreams and I’m not going anywhere but forwards.

My dreams have grown and changed. And one day I am going to reach them. I challenge you WE Day start chasing your dreams. If I can do it, so can you.
