So all the time people come up to me and say: “John, what the hell happened to Jack and Diane and I go. Nothing happened to them, you know, i just, I just made them up, the people would always go why don’t you write a song and tell us what happened to them – and i would walk away thinking that is the stupidest idea i’ve ever heard in my life, because i just couldnt figure out how to make that work. you know i just felt silly, you know, Jack and Diane again. So when I was writing songs for this record I had – that just came out. I was writing about a guy named Richard Pryor and I thought who better to tell the story about Richard Pryor then Diane and Jack, right. Made perfect sense to me, right?
