Hello friends of Ruth. I am Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse and I am talking to you from our studios here in Southern California. Today is November 20th 2012. I want to share with you an experience that I had last week.
I was visiting with a large state university, and I had a speaking engagement with a Catholic student group there. One of the young ladies in the group told me that she’s a resident adviser in her dorm, and the chief resident adviser in her particular dorm happened to be a homosexual man. Last year, he decided that it was a good idea to have, as a social event in their dorm, a drag party. A drag party, presumably, would be where everybody dresses up in clothing of the opposite sex.
Well, this young lady that I met a good Catholic girl was not eager to participate, and she said, “You know, I really don’t think I can be part of this. This is just not something I want to contribute to.” And he pressed her pretty hard about why and tried to; he was really leaning on her, trying to make her uncomfortable. She felt very strongly that he was trying to get her to either go along with the program; or make her feel bad, make her look bad. Finally, what they came up with is; that she would need to do her own program, provide her own event a counter even, not a counter event necessarily but some additional event that she would have sole responsibility for putting on for her dormitory of 800 students. So he was pressuring her to participate and he was being punitive with her.
Now the reason I tell you this story is that I think a lot of our students are encountering this type of situation in their dorms and on their college campuses.

In the aftermath of the election a lot of social conservatives are really concerned about what’s going on in the culture, we are saying to ourselves, gosh! We need to do something about the media, gosh! we needed more TV ads for our program for our political campaign, gosh! we needed more TV ads in order to get our political message out.
What I want to say to you is that the other side has RA’s in the dorm, where you young people are going to school, there’s no TV message that is going to do the job of countering that type of influence, somebody’s gotta be there talking to young people one at a time in the places where they’re hanging out and doing the things that they are doing.
There is no mass media strategy by itself that will solve this problem. And so we feel here at the Ruth Institute that our mission is more important than other, because we are the ones who are out there talking to the young people, we are going to their classes, we are providing them with educational content, we are spending time with them, we’re hanging out with them, we are listening to what they have to say. So I would really, really encourage you to support the Ruth Institute to the best of our ability, we are doing something that nobody else is doing, and I think you will agree something that really needs to get done.

And this holiday season, when you’re young people come home from college, ask them about this, ask them if they have a gay RA in their dorms, because as I’ve talked to other people about this, a lot of them have said, gosh! now that you’ve mentioned it, my daughter was in a dorm, even at a Christian college where she had a gay RA. So please talk to your young people about this and see what kind of pressure they maybe under, that maybe even they don’t realize how much it’s having an impact upon them.
I am Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, thank you so much for listening.
