One Texas mother has a happy healthy 11-month-old son, but it hasn’t always been that way. When Megan Boler’s son, Matthew, was 2 months old, he had a narrow and oblong shaped head. She though her baby had just skipped the family trade of large roundheads. But at his two month check up, the pediatrician told Boler she couldn’t find the baby’s soft spot. She told Boler not to take the situation lightly and referred Matthew to a specialist.
At Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston they diagnosed Matthew with a condition called sagittal synostosis, meaning his skull had fused on the back of his head too early. In rare cases, it can cause developmental delays.
Luckily though for the Boler’s, they caught it soon enough that doctors were able to do surgery with small cuts. Matthew had to wear a helmet 24 hours a day for four months. Boler says that was challenging, but today it is hard to tell anything was ever wrong with little Matthew. Now Boler is trying to share her story, so other parents know how to identify the problem.
