Haley Barbour On Confederacy Proclamation
Particularly because the government did not mention slavery in this proclamation, was that a mistake?
Well, I don’t think so, my State Legislature has made a legislation has made an inactive holiday confederate memorial day, have done it for years under the republican governors, democratic governors and for 7 years as governor, I have issued a proclamation, because of what the legislature has done, my democratic predecessors did as well, I don’t know what you say about slavery, but anybody thinks you have to explain to people what slavery is a bad thing, I think it goes without saying.
But the sensitivity about it, because we heard from a number of African American, politicians and people on the street were interviewed in Virginia and going this is offensive to celebrate something that really was about slavery. And absolutely having no mention about it, what do you do in your State?
Maybe they should talk about democratic legislature, which has, not exactly the same thing in Mississippi in years, as far as I know the Democratic legislature, we have a majority, both Houses are Democrats, I’m unaware of them being criticized for them having their supporters feel uncomfortable with it.
You know what I’m trying to get at? There is a sort of feeling that’s insensitive, but you clearly don’t agree?
To me it’ the sort of feeling that its a knit[small] that its not significant, that its not a – he’s trying to make a big deal that doesn’t amount to diddly[nothing].
