Dr. Jeffrey Fishberger of The Trevor Project recently took readers questions about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth. Several readers had questions about young people who were bullied for either being gay or being perceived as gay.

Re Teenage Suicides Bewilder an Island, and the Experts (March 18): Our small rural high school has also experienced an epidemic of suicides. One of the students was a member of my tightly knit gifted class of 12. We, too, were descended upon by outside experts, and what we learned was that we found it absolutely emotionally intolerable to be around anyone who had not known the student or was not a member of the class. This was an important lesson for me, and one that helps me to understand other peoples grief. Outsiders should say nothing more than Im sorry.

High school was bad. I was obviously gay, and some kids didn’t like that. And I did get harassed.

What I’d love you to take away from it is that however bad it is now, it gets better and it can get great

And it’s important for adults to reach out to kids, and share our storiesso that they can picture futures for themselves that are worth sticking around for.

Okay little ones. Here’s the first thing you need to know.

You are perfect and wonderful exactly as you are.

You’re not alone.

There are a ton of us out here in this world.

I love you without even knowing you.
