I’m Christopher Waldorf and I’m one of the subjects in the documentary Kiki. A Kiki ball is made up of different categories. And it’s a place where LGBT youth come to explore their talents and their uniqueness and just be themselves. I met Twiggy through a friend and we instantly connected.
Pull slow. One…two…three. Bring your knees in.
We kind of had – we had a phone conversation for like a few hours, getting to know each other, and he helped me kind of find myself, ‘cause he went through a lot of the things I went through, but before me, so the – he could understand what I was going through, something that my parents couldn’t. And he helped me, he helped guide me to kind of where I am today.

This community was the first and only place I had ever been or experienced that many folks like myself. Although Balls themselves are competitions, the organizations who compete at them are called ‘Houses’ and they’re really much so like families. And so…I very quickly, like, got deeply involved in the community, and my House family really became my surrogate family.
[Music] Push, push, not keeping a rush…. Aw aw aw aw aw aw ooooo….
So hi, my name is Izana Videl otherwise known as Zariya from the film Kiki. I was kinda isolated by my parents because I didn’t have people that I could talk to or express what I was going through to. And I feel as though you need this kind of support system, which I lacked at an early stage. Kiki scene offered me refuge, in the sense that I met individuals that were like myself, trans or non-trans, or within the gay community. Yeah, I’m grateful for that.
Bitch, you a whole different person now.
[Music] CHECK IT OUT! CHECK IT OUT!!!!!!!!!!!
For a young person who’s LGBTQ who’s feeling isolated, my advice is to live in your truth.
Live in your truth.
Is it okay to not be okay. Everyone has the right to self-identify. And you’re not wrong, in any way, shape or form for feeling as though you’re different.
Know that you were put on this earth for something greater than you what you think. Don’t think that you being different or you being unique is an issue. Just know that it’s a gift, and that it does truly get better after you accept that and you showcase that to the world.
Life is about experience. Life is about getting to know who you are. And life is about growth. Life is about self-expression.
